This position reports to the Correctional Captain II and is involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities at a medium custody male correctional institution. Responsibilities are primarily custodial in nature serving as shift supervisor. This level is distinguished from Correctional Lieutenant I based on increased staffing totals, larger offender population totals and the complexity of the facility operation which may include some restrictive housing. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serving as first-line supervisor of Correctional Sergeant II's.

  • Serving as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) in absence of the Correctional Captain II.

  • Assisting with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers' work schedule and coordinate activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population as needed.

  • Coordinating actions, such as employee leave requests, reviewing applications for employment, monthly reports, offender concerns or issues, and other activities relative to a correctional facility or institution.

  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.

  • Reviewing investigations regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.

  • Assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.

  • Serving on the offender classification committee.

  • Serving as incident commander with the authority to make decision to use impact munition and preparing a variety of records and reports.  

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

Note to Current State Employees:

The salary grade for this position is NC09 (Salary Range: $38,516 - $67,404). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Warren Correctional Institution:

Warren Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Manson, NC which houses approximately 725 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to one Correction Enterprises operation located off site: The Janitorial Product Plant manufactures a variety of cleaning products, soap, and plastic bags that are sold to various agencies/companies.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document in the work experience section of the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Documented experience with report writing.

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
