Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for carrying a caseload of offenders, conducting initial assessments of offender needs, developing case plans, answering and following-up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as, offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating.

  • Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.

  • Providing Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.

  • Working knowledge of Prisons' policies and procedures.

  • Gathering and evaluating information concerning an individual's past experience(s), training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.

  • Working knowledge of correctional programs and services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.

  • Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program within the framework of Prisons' policies and procedures.

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and/or verbally abusive.

  • Defending oneself against attacks by violent persons.

  • Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC):

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision.  Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution
