As a member of Blue Shield's Corporate Citizenship's team, the Corporate Citizenship Consultant will help lead the company's efforts to become a model for being a socially responsible health insurer. These efforts include volunteerism & employee engagement, corporate giving, community involvement, environmental sustainability, and stakeholder engagement. Based in San Francisco, CA, the Corporate Citizenship Consultant will report to the Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship. He/she will operate cross-functionally with many different departments within the company, most frequently with Corporate Communications, Internal Communications, Human Resources, Brand, Government Affairs and Corporate Real Estate. In addition, this position will represent Blue Shield of California with community organizations who are seeking sponsorship or volunteer engagement. This is a highly visible and collaborative role with employees and leaders at all levels of the organization, requiring the incumbent to have a strong understanding of the company's business strategy and where citizenship supports those efforts. We are looking for a self-starter who is passionate about social impact and who has an outstanding ability to communicate, mobilize and achieve results.
Community Service and Giving
Volunteer Management: Serve as the internal champion and resource for employee volunteerism and community involvement, both supporting the company's desire to be a great place to work. Develop a core leadership team from each business unit to serve as Cares Leaders and be an advocate for community service within their department. Create and execute on companywide campaign(s) each year. Support team and business unit efforts to integrate volunteer service into their team building activities. Additionally, support the company's commitment to provide all employees with 24 hours of community service time each year. This includes communications, answering questions from employees and their managers, and setting up the technology within Blue Shield's system for tracking.
Community Engagement: Represent Blue Shield of California with community organizations who are seeking sponsorship or volunteer service. Meet regularly with local and statewide non-profit organizations whose mission aligns with Blue Shield's and who can provide valuable opportunities for Blue Shield employees to serve their communities. Partner with corporate and internal communications to promote awareness about the company's social responsibility initiatives.
Charitable Giving: Manage the company's annual employee matching fund, including marketing, communications, and program administration. Partner with an outside company (Benevity) to maintain an engaging and easy-to-use website for Blue Shield employees, providing robust opportunities for employees to give to charities within our core giving areas. Measure community service hours and provide donations to organizations where employees have volunteered. Support reporting capabilities to support a comprehensive and accurate picture of total volunteerism and giving.
Board & Pro Bono Service: Provide one-on-one support to leaders within Blue Shield who are interested in serving on a local, community board or providing their professional skills for a nonprofit challenge. Continue to monitor trends in board service and pro bono programs throughout the state and determine, in time, if a more formal program is necessary.
Partner with the Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship to develop and mature the Corporate Citizenship programs at Blue Shield. Provide best-in-class ideas and benchmark with leading companies to help Blue Shield's leaders understand what employees expect from a modern enterprise. Provide insights and provocative ideas to challenge the status quo and better align all citizenship activities to the company's strategy and critical few. Additionally, meet regularly with the Blue Shield of California staff to determine how the company's employees and citizenship strategy can align to their giving.
Candidate Profile and Requirements:
Possesses a bachelor's degree with at least 7 years of relevant cross-functional, cross disciplinary experience or an equivalent of education and experience. Corporate Citizenship / Corporate Social Responsibility experience in a corporate setting is preferred, with demonstrated experience with community volunteering and/or nonprofit management and philanthropy.
Communicates a strong personal belief that citizenship can make a difference for the company and society. Expresses a strong interest in and knowledge of social and environmental issues.
Excellent written and verbal communication, and organizational and project skills.
Has a systematic approach to mapping and understanding the company's social and environmental impacts and the stakeholders that will be affected. Has a good understanding of the business strategy and challenges and can identify how Corporate Citizenship issues can impact specific business networks.
