Position Overview

The Corporate Business Development team is looking to add a Manager to our small, yet highly impactful team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a group that works in a fast paced environment on a broad variety of corporate initiatives. This position will allow the individual to develop dynamic skills and market expertise, while making a significant impact to NPD's Corporate Business Development activity.

The team's primary role is supporting NPD's external growth strategy. We provide comprehensive and actionable information on the competitive landscape and deliver on the revenue objectives for Data Partnerships.

The individual will assist with efforts across the acquisition/investment/partnership activity, Competition Tracking as well as Data Partnerships. The position is designed for a high-growth potential individual who can learn and develop in the role.

The position reports into the VP of Corporate Business Development & Data Partnerships.

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the EVP and VP within Corporate Business Development in three areas: acquisitions/partnerships/investments, competition tracking & data partnerships

  • Acquisitions/Partnerships/Investments:

  • Fuel the acquisition/investment/partnership pipeline by identifying companies that could be potential targets

  • Complete high-level evaluations on pipeline companies

  • Meet with potential acquisition targets to help evaluate fit

  • Assist with due diligence on acquisition targets

  • Competition Tracking:

  • Support the Corporate Competition Tracking effort by assisting with company evaluations, maintaining the database of competitive intelligence, and providing feedback to the submitters

  • Assist with compiling reports on competitive intelligence that can be provided to the Sector Heads as well as the Executive Committee

  • Identify new sources of competitive intelligence

  • Champion the Competition Tracking efforts with internal teams

  • Data Partnerships:

  • Support the Data Partnership effort by identifying partnership targets

  • Be tuned in to trends in the data landscape that may lead to partnership opportunities

  • Develop collateral to be used with potential partners

  • Assist with navigating internal stakeholders to evaluate feasibility and move potential Data Partners through the pipeline

  • Manage ongoing partnerships

  • The position will liaise with many internal groups as well as engaging with many companies external to NPD


  • 3 -5 years of experience

  • Understanding / knowledge of the market research landscape and its periphery

  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with Excel & PowerPoint (Pivot Tables, Formula Writing)

  • Basic knowledge of DecisionKey or equivalent tool to support early-stage Data Partnership investigations is required

  • Basic knowledge of Salesforce, which is where the Competitive Intelligence database is maintained is preferred but not required.

  • Previous experience with Mergers and Acquisitions a plus

  • Proven ability to support a team in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to think strategically when solving problems and seeking out new areas for the business.

  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and experience communicating with corporate executives.

  • Candidate must possess a strong attention to detail and have the desire to grow.

We are looking for a Director, Business Development who will grow at our Port Washington, NY corporate office. The Business Development Director position is critical to the identification, prospecting and relationship building connection of the Hawthorne Gardening Company to potential large-scale commercial hydroponic facility owners around the country but particularly in the Northeast Region. The primary purpose if this role is to find new business partnerships and future revenue opportunities for the Hawthorne Gardening Company. We are seeking an experienced Director of Business Development for our Port Washington, NY office, with a verifiable track record of generating leads and establishing new and existing markets. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, have proven experience in a B2B sales role, have excellent relationship building and communication skills and preferably an established network of asset managers, family fund managers and private equity in their location/territory. As a member of our team you will explain the company's products in such a way that will lead your contact to consider further discussion. This will be done through industry event attendance, telephone calls and emails. The ideal candidate will build and cultivate prospect relationships by initiating communications and conducting follow-up to move opportunities to a sales ready opportunity. The position reports into the Chief Operating Officer / Head of Sales. In this role you will: * Build a portfolio of investors who plan to set up hydroponic cultivation facilities in the future * Find new revenue streams and new hydroponic cultivation partners for the company * Understand, pitch and sell the Hawthorne Solutions strategy to high value targets * Create relevant lists of currently expanding or new target investors (both private equity and public) in the hydroponics cultivation space * Work closely with state government groups and lobbyist to connect with potential clients * Work across the US and Canada to understand the network web of cultivation investors * Outbound lead generation (eg. schedule qualified face-to-face meetings and calls for the Sales Executives) and inbound lead handling / qualification * Perform email outreach, prospecting, cold-calling * Create and execute lead generation campaigns * Follow up on sales enquiries * Identifying important decision makers at prospective targets * Attending industry events to generate interest in Hawthorne * Using digital and business/social media to promote brand values * Maintaining data in SAP, including lead and opportunity analysis and reporting * Providing feedback to sales and product management * Collaborate with law firms who represent clients' interests and handle cultivation license applications * Oversee and execute investor outreach activities such as investor meetings, receptions, holiday gifts, and ad hoc communications * Assists with relationship maintenance of new investor partnerships and tracks commitments and money raised by people in the hydroponics cultivation space * Provides feedback to organization regarding the investment community's perception of the company * Have a willingness to travel 50% of the time The perfect person will have: * Minimum 7 years of experience in investor relations, finance and venture capital fundraising * Strong client relationship experience preferred * Strong knowledge of investment terminology and understanding of financial reporting * Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong ability to communicate with broad range of investors * A track-record in business development to the investment management market * An understanding of new business opportunities, the cannabis market and the investment process * Bachelor's Degree, MBA in Finance or Marketing preferred * Working knowledge of the publicly traded Canadian hydroponic cultivation network of growers and US Commercial hydroponic operations Behavioral Attributes: * An open communicator, used to working with managers and peers on a remote basis * A resourceful and pro-active nature, coupled with a desire to learn, and to share knowledge within the team * Ability to work well independently, and as part of a team * Strong, self-motivated, work-ethic Not interested in this role?
