Position Summary:

The Programming Coordinator works directly with students via instructing, advising, and assisting them in the pursuit of outdoor recreation experiences. Primary responsibilities include overseeing all operational logistics for all trips and activities, as well as, developing and implementing all such programming. Additionally, this position is responsible for coordination and oversight of marketing Outdoor Pursuits programming.

Job Description:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Recreational Services and the Coordinator of Operations to manage the Outdoor Pursuits program.

  • Lead, instruct and assist with development of all OP trips and activities. Trips include, but are not limited to rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking/backpacking, backcountry skiing/riding, rock climbing, and mountaineering. Clinic topics include, but are not limited to avalanche education, climbing instruction, river rescue, and kayak instruction. There are 30 to 40 trips and clinics offered per year. Perform reconnaissance of new trip venues.

  • Assist with the development of all program risk management and safety standards and the production of internal documentation and manuals.

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Outdoor Center including management and supervision of all student staff.

  • Provide direct oversight of the climbing wall operations, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating climbing wall staff.

  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate one professional intern and assist with development of all Outdoor Pursuits student employees.

  • Develop and implement marketing of Outdoor Pursuits programming including, but not limited to social media.

  • Assist with the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of all Outdoor Pursuits equipment.

  • Oversee the growth and maintenance of the Outdoor Pursuits resource library.

  • Maintain records, prepare and analyze statistical reports, evaluation, participation surveys, and program manuals.

  • Manage, maintain, operate and coordinate staff training for the van and trailer operations.

  • Maintain, at minimum, current Wilderness First Responder or above and CPR certifications.

  • Maintain a current State of Colorado Driver's License. Pursuant to this requirement, the employee is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing per Fort Lewis College Business Policies 4-12 and 4-14.

Administration

  • Contribute to a comprehensive marketing strategy that promotes recreational opportunities at Fort Lewis College.

  • Develops annual goals with appropriate evaluation and assessment metrics to demonstrate progress.

  • Demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills with diverse customers from students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and College guests.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.

  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of demonstrated working/life experience in related outdoor programming.

  • Outdoor skills and experiences with the ability to instruct in at least four of the following activities: Rafting, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Hiking/Backpacking, Backcountry Skiing/Boarding, Rock/Ice Climbing, Mountaineering, Wilderness Medicine, Avalanche Education. This experience should be in environments similar to the Four-Corners region (i.e.: mountains, high desert, canyons, and whitewater rivers).

  • Experience with the design and facilitation of programs and trainings common to outdoor skill activities and outdoor leadership.

  • Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices and industry standards as they relate to outdoor recreation and recreational facilities.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated training experience.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with written communication skills.

  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

  • Wilderness First Responder or above and CPR certifications.

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

  • Work experience with a college/university outdoor program, commercial guide or outfitter, or work with the National Outdoor Leadership School, Outward Bound, or similar.

  • Purchasing and procurement experience in the outdoor industry.

  • Repair and maintenance of outdoor equipment including ski/board tuning, bike repair, and sewing skills.

  • Instructor certifications and demonstrated ability to teach nationally recognized certification courses such as ACA, AMGA, WMA, AIARE and LNT.

  • A State of Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to earn.

  • Knowledge of the outdoor recreational opportunities in the Four-Corners region.

  • Knowledge of and experience teaching Leave-No-Trace ethics.

  • Retail and/or rental operational experience.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Effective communication skills including listening, speaking, and writing.

  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators at all levels.

  • Demonstrated experience with management software such as Rent Master, CLASS or Fusion.

  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office products, such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Excel.

  • Demonstrated experience with Student Learning Outcomes and Assessments.

  • Demonstrated program marketing and promotion experience.

Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position reports to the Assistant Director of Recreational Services - Outdoor Pursuits.

  • This position supervises one professional intern.

  • This position supervises student employees.

Significant work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of 1-2 weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

Individuals should be able to work alone or with people; during day/night/weekend/holiday hours.

In addition to physical demands required of duties performed in a normal office setting, the position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. In addition, work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

More specific demands include:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other individuals (i.e., co-workers, students, public, alumni, community-based clients, and other stakeholders) through public speaking, email, and phone.

  • Use and normal maintenance of office machines (e.g., copier, computer, printer, etc.).

  • Handling of equipment weighing over 50 lbs. including floor to waist and overhead lifting.

  • Ability to lift, push and move equipment weighing over 50 lbs.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, reach, carry, grasp and turn objects.

  • Ability to climb stairs; and stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Frequent use of phone and repetitive use of hand & fingers to take messages, operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office task.

  • Acceptable eyesight to read printed material & a computer monitor.

  • Acceptable hearing to communicate with others in person or through telephonic means.

  • Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and in outdoor settings.

  • Ability to use and operate motor vehicles, including large-passenger vans, and trailers for transportation and other job duties.

  • Ability to proficiently maneuver rafts, canoes, and kayaks both on the water by steering and guiding and on land by carrying and lifting.

  • Ability to sit in watercrafts for long periods of time.

Travel:

  • This position will require travel locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Travel will be approximately 40% of this position responsibility.

Compensation

The salary range is $52,000 to $55,000. plus a comprehensive benefits package
