The Department of Recreational Sports at the State University of New York at Cortland is seeking a highly motivated and energetic professional for the position of Coordinator of Recreational Sports

• Outdoor Pursuits. This individual will help develop and coordinate the Outdoor Pursuits program, which includes the Outdoor Pursuits center within the award-winning 150,000 sq. ft. Student Life Center and all programs and projects associated with the center. This individual will have oversight of the Rock Climbing and Bouldering Wall, tripping program, the Cortland Bike Program, and the Adirondack Trailblazers program for incoming first year and transfer students. This individual will also assist with all aspects of student employees at the Rock Climbing Wall and Outdoor Pursuits programs. This is a 12-month, full-time position.

Major Responsibilities

• Assist with the management of the Rock Climbing Wall, Bouldering Wall, and the entire Outdoor Pursuits Center in the Student Life Center, which includes maintaining an up to date program schedule, recruitment, training, and evaluation of student personnel, and creating and implementing student staff schedules (evening and weekend hours required).

• Collaborate with the director of the Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education to plan, schedule and implement various outdoor pursuits activities at the center through tripping program.

• Provide assistance with the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of all student employees (approximately 50) for the Rock Climbing and Outdoor Pursuits Program for the positions of group leaders, belayers, service desk supervisors, and equipment checkout supervisors.

• Assist with the oversight of the operation of the outdoor recreation equipment checkout/rental service including equipment management, the Cortland Bike Project, creating, and scheduling team building services for campus and non-campus entities, and budget analysis/management for purchasing and maintenance of equipment.

• Attend all Recreational Sports Department staff meetings.

• Plan, develop and implement a comprehensive tripping program for individuals with varying levels of skill.

• Supervise/lead various tripping activities such as white-water rafting, skiing, rock climbing, caving, cycling, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, camping, and kayaking.

• Oversee all aspects of the Adirondack Trailblazers Program which includes recruitment and training of lead staff, marketing of program, planning and execution of the program, budget management, and communication with campus stakeholders.

• Assist with onsite facility administration of the Student Life Center outside of the academic year, including summer, winter, and holiday breaks. This includes onsite coverage when needed and assistance with onsite operations.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

This individual will report directly to the Director of Recreational Sports and will have supervisory responsibility for graduate assistants and undergraduate student workers within the Rock Climbing Wall and Outdoor Pursuits program. This individual will also maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty and staff within the SLC and across the campus community.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sport Management or related field.

• Experience in experiential/outdoor education or other relevant field.

• Experience in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student employees.

• CPR/First Aid/AED certification AND Wilderness First Responder (must be obtained within first six months of employment)

• Experience planning, managing, or directing a variety of outdoor recreation activities such as skiing, rock climbing, cycling, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, camping, and kayaking.

• A valid U.S. driver's license, with the ability to drive 12-passenger vans.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sport Management or related field.

• Prior work experience in a campus Recreational Sports program.

• Outdoor recreation equipment management experience.

• CPR/First Aid/AED instructor.

• Experience with leading wilderness medicine trainings and certifications.

• Experience with team building activities for large and small groups.
