POSITION: Coordinator of Multilingual Education

CONTRACT LENGTH: 260 Day Calendar

Required Competencies

● School Systems: Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational work and goals of public schools, their structure, and their day-to-day functioning.

● Instructional Methods: Familiarity with advising education professionals on the proper adaptation of curricula in lesson plans, classroom management, professional conduct as a teacher, and other activities and methods related to teaching multilingual learners.

● Assessment Processes: Familiarity with various evaluation techniques, theories, and tools applicable in the assessment of multilingual learners.

● Provide Feedback to Teachers and Instructional Coaches: Familiarity with communicating with teachers and instructional coaches to provide them with detailed feedback on their teaching and coaching performance, class management and curriculum adherence.

● Project Management: Knowledge of project management and the activities which comprise this area. Know the variables implied in project management such as time, resources, requirements, deadlines, and responding to unexpected events.

● Write Work-Related Reports: Knowledge of composing work-related reports that support effective relationship management and a high standard of documentation and record keeping. Write and present results and conclusions in a clear, intelligible way so they are comprehensible to a non-expert audience.

● Present Reports: Experience displaying results, statistics, and conclusions to an audience in a transparent and straightforward way.

Example Activities

● Provide leadership and coordination of services for multilingual learners, grades K-12.

● Promote instruction and strategies that improve the performance of students in the English as a New Language (ENL) and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs.

● Assist building principals in monitoring the performance of multilingual learners to ensure they are progressing.

● Assist in program development and ongoing evaluation of ENL services and implement a plan to improve programming and performance.

● Visit schools and serve as a resource person by providing consultation and assistance to administration and teachers.

● Oversee data submissions to the Indiana Department of Education related to multilingual learners.

● Provide staff development to teachers and administration.

● Assist in purchasing supplemental instructional materials and supplies for the ENL and DLI programs.

● Collaborate with the Elementary and Secondary Curriculum Coordinators to support implementation of instructional coaching, professional development, program evaluation, and curriculum that enable multilingual learners to progress in the general curriculum and language acquisition.

● Recognize the availability of resources and assist in coordinating the development of budgetary requests and financial recommendations.

● Keep informed of all legal requirements governing ENL services.

● Assume responsibility for remaining current with the literature and research findings concerning evidence-based practices for multilingual learners.

● Maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, administration, teachers, and community members.

● Oversee meetings with ENL and DLI staff to discuss policy compliance and provide professional development.

● Provide feedback to schools on School Improvement Plans.

● Assist building administration with the interviewing and recommending employment of personnel for ENL and DLI programs.

● Collaborate with the Coordinator of Student Programs and Community Liaison to oversee translation and interpreting services, including the district multilingual liaison team, as well as partnerships with a variety of community agencies that provide services to immigrant and refugee students and families.

● Oversee WIDA assessments.

● Oversee coordination of compliance documents, e.g., ILPs and monitoring forms.

● Manage the Title III, Significant Immigrant, Refugee, and Dual Language Immersion grants.

● Oversee equitable consultation to non-public schools within the boundaries of the district.

● Examine and analyze performance data for multilingual learners.

● Serve as a member on various committees e.g., Community Coalition, Multi-Tiered System of Supports, etc.

● Assist in completing goals for Teaching and Learning as outlined in the District's Strategic Plan and under the direction of the Interim Director of Teaching and Learning, 9-12.

● Serve as a resource to school teams regarding the assessment of students in the ENL program with suspected disabilities.

● Coordinate summer school for students in the ENL and DLI programs.

● Other duties as assigned.

Job Details

The Coordinator for Multilingual Education is a member of the District Teaching and Learning team and reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning, 9-12.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 70% sitting, 20% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience

Five (5) years of professional experience in leading, coaching, and delivering high quality instructional support, specific to serving multilingual populations, to teachers and administrators in an educational setting.

Licensure/Education

● A Master's Degree in education, education administration, or another related field.

● Teacher of English Learners license required.

● Building or District Administrator license preferred.

Equivalency

Education and experience equivalent to a Master's degree and five (5) years of professional experience serving multilingual youth.
