This position is responsible for coordinating programs and events which address the needs of international students. The responsibility includes international student advising, retention, programming and assessment. Specific responsibilities include keeping abreast of the latest issues and trends impacting international students in the USA and changes in student immigration regulations/laws; advising students on financial matters including tax support and personal, academic, and adjustment issues; working with various campus offices to assist students; working with sponsor and other domestic/ international partners representatives, managing international student arrival, orientation and check-in. This position reports to Vice Provost for Global Engagement.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities):

Manages international student arrival, orientation, and check-in.

  • Create and communicate pre-arrival information each semester for all incoming F-1 students, including housing, visas, arrival, orientation, course enrollment, etc.

  • Manage new student arrival, including coordinating airport pick-up and move-in to campus housing if applicable.

  • Organize New International Student Orientation activities, liaising with other departments such as Housing, Student Life, Student Success Office, Graduate School and New Student Programs.

  • Coordinate the International Student immigration Check-in process.

Manages international student retention

  • Monitor international students StarFish Alerts and check in with students who are struggling academically.

  • Create programming to support international student retention.

  • Collect international student retention rates and develop strategies to support current students to improve retention.

  • Assist the Vice Provost in providing reports to sponsors about current students.

  • Develop and implement the International Student Leadership Program, including workshops, activities, community engagement activities as well as program evaluation.

Advise international students on personal, academic, financial, and adjustment matters

  • Plan and host workshops to inform international students on relevant topics such as academic success, self-advocacy, effective communication, leadership development, cultural adjustment, faculty engagement, financial management, and taxes.

  • Meet with international graduate, undergraduate, or Law students who have either self-reported or have been reported by faculty/staff as struggling with issues affecting their experience at TU (homesickness, conflicts with students or TU offices), assisting with resources, explaining policies and following up with students.

  • Support International students with filing for taxes and on campus work permit process.

  • Provide support to students who are facing emergencies, incidents, or catastrophes in their home countries.

Coordinate campus programming for international students and support international student organizations:

  • Host international student events and excursions/outings to share US/Oklahoma/Tulsa Culture with the students,

  • Hire and train a team of student staff and volunteers to develop peer mentor programs

  • Liaise and support international student organizations in their endeavors and events.

Other Duties

  • Maintain up to date Designate School Official (DSO) and Department of Homeland Security training requirements.

  • Represents the CGE at campus, community, and national meetings as requested.

  • Assists with responding to emergencies involving international students on campus.

  • Provides accurate reporting regarding programs, activities, and student advising.

  • Keeps data on international student participation in different programs.

  • Answers national surveys international student participation.

  • Coordinates the logistics of campus visits from program sponsors.

  • Performs other duties as needed/assigned.

  • Support the mission of the Center for Global Engagement promoting the Center's activities and programs.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or closely related field; 3-5 years experience working in Higher Education Administration.

  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and the Student Exchange Visitor Program;

  • Ability to be authorized by the US Government as a Designated School Official and Assistant Responsible Officer,

  • Ability to interact with and advise students from diverse cultures;

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability to learn to use University Database systems such as Colleague, Slate, and Terra Dotta,

  • Ability to communicate professionally with embassy and government officials;

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels within the university;

  • Experience and willingness to travel internationally if needed;

  • Strong sensitivity to cultural diversity.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or closely related field; 3-5 years experience working in Higher Education Administration.
