COORDINATOR OF INSTRUCTION

Position Purpose: The position is responsible for planning, developing, directing, and supporting all efforts associated with academic support programs, such as, school-based grants; instructional services relating to curriculum development, implementation and coordination of the division's middle school curriculum, the division's literacy plan as implemented by the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA), GATE, and other special academic programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Support staff in the use and implementation of district wide platforms/programs of classroom testing instruments.

  • Stay abreast of the latest research, innovation, program trends, and methodologies and implement new strategies, including those associated with evidenced-based literacy intervention and the science of reading.

  • Support elementary and middle schools in the implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act.

  • Serve as a consultant in the selection of instructional supplies, equipment, and books.

  • Assist in the planning professional development for division as well as school related needs to help raise the level of instructional performance.

  • Recommend ways in which the curriculum can be adjusted and differentiated to meet the special learning needs of exceptional children.

  • Monitor the elementary schools' implementation and progress monitoring of individual Student Reading Plans, as identified by the VALLS assessment and the VLA.

  • Assist in researching new topics related to curriculum development.

  • Participate in ongoing curriculum development projects.

  • Represent school division at instructional meetings and report necessary information back to key stakeholders

  • Take initiative and proactively identifies opportunities to strengthen one's team and organization

  • Assist in communicating the approved curriculum to the professional staff and maintain a list of approved instructional materials.

  • Plan and oversee division-level student events

  • Assist schools in coordinating after school remediation and summer school.

  • Provide support to middle school administration in accordance with the school division's policies and procedures

  • Work collaboratively with instructional staff to design and implement a quality professional development for licensed staff

  • Attend and participate in school data and PLC meetings

  • Oversee the GATE program

  • Attend School Board and related division meetings

  • Support the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in working with teacher committees to coordinate grade level and department meetings for horizontal and vertical continuity throughout the instructional program.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction or the Division Superintendent.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Considerable skill in the use of computer technology and data analysis in performance of tests;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and members of the community;

  • Demonstrate positive school-community relations;

  • Ability to prepare required written reports including clear and concise reporting;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic statistics preferred;

  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to develop and implement projects.

  • Ability to problem-solve independently.

  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching reading or English/Language Arts

  • Master's Degree or currently enrolled in a graduate program

  • LETRS training, preferred

  • Have demonstrated, in a public-school system, professional knowledge necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community

Terms of Employment:

  • Twelve-month Contract

  • Salary according to School Board approved Coordinator's Salary Scale

Reports to:

  • Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction

Evaluation:

  • Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel
