Job Description:

Coordinator of Challenge Course and Climbing Wall Operations

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation, the Coordinator of Challenge Course and Climbing Wall Operations assists in oversight of a comprehensive outdoor recreation program. This position directly oversees the day-to-day operations, and program facilitation of the UREC Challenge Course and Climbing Wall.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Responsible for outreach, planning, organization, facilitation and evaluation of challenge course and team building programs.

  • Oversight of the daily operations and inspection, maintenance, and evaluation of the indoor climbing wall.

  • Hire, train, supervise and support student challenge course facilitators and climbing wall staff.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP:

  • Develop skills session programs for climbing area.

The current skills session program is built upon helping people feel comfortable in the climbing area. The coordinator has a chance to evaluate and update the skills session program and to develop advanced classes for our more efficient climbers.

  • Be innovative in our approach to challenge course facilitation.

In September 2023, UREC opened a new challenge course and with this comes the need to develop how we plan our challenge course facilitation. The new course includes individual elements, team elements, and a 475-foot zipline.

This new course has stairs on both large towers to make that entire course more adaptable to patrons of all skill levels. The coordinator will help develop a plan for promoting the challenge course to the LSU Community and external entities.

  • Train and manage route setting staff.

Boulder and top rope routes in the UREC Climbing Area are designed and set by our student route setter staff. The coordinator is responsible for training and setting guidelines for route setters, creating route grade distributions, and strategically scheduling route setting shifts to keep the climbing wall new and engaging for the climbing community at LSU.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Support (40%)

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the challenge course and indoor climbing wall. Provide feedback regarding programs and experiences by utilizing UREC.

Decides the route settings on the indoor climbing wall as well as the types of low elements on the challenge course. Performs periodic inspections of all challenge course elements to ensure safe operation.

Direct Student Support (30%)

Advise students individually on Outdoor Recreation operations providing front-line advocacy and support. Translate department efforts, initiatives, and goals to students through interactions at programs, services, events, and experiences.

Serve as a liaison between students and UREC leadership regarding outdoor recreation, challenge course and climbing wall usage. Responsible for developing training that ensures Outdoor Recreation student employees are knowledgeable about UREC policy and procedures related to ensuring a safe environment in our spaces.

Program Support (15%)

Coordinates logistics for programs, events, and experiences for the challenge course and climbing area. Responsible for safety and maintenance checks for challenge course and climbing area. Oversees expenditures for equipment, staffing and program needs for the challenge course and climbing area.

Quality Control (10%)

Ensures every aspect of programmatic and facility outputs including administrative tasks, implementation, and overall design exudes a high degree of quality. Embraces and executes the marginal gains approach and seeks to improve the level of all services, events, programs, and experiences in department for continuous improvement every academic year. Contributes to the work environment by developing and maintaining positive relationships that support a culture of teamwork and cooperation.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Other duties as assigned by UREC leadership or Associate Director of Programs. This includes but not limited to efforts that support broad division and institution efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Career Expo, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year of experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Sport Management, Parks and Recreation, Kinesiology, Higher Education, Business, Public Administration, or related field
  • 2 years of experience in outdoor and experiential education, with particular emphasis in facilitating climbing programs for diverse client groups

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level 1 or higher

  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certification

  • American Red Cross

  • CPR/First Aid for Professional Rescuers Instructor certification
