TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Beginning Date of Employment - 03-01-2024; 12 Month Position, NC Teacher Salary, Part-Time (25-30 hours per week)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Administrative license or be able to attain one. Minimum of five years' experience in a Head Coach position, Previous experience as a Secondary School Principal, Athletic Director preferred.

  • Coaching, teaching, and administration background preferred.

  • Previous experience as a driver education instructor, current license in driver education instruction preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides overall leadership, direction, supervision and coordination for the athletics program (grades 6-12). Also, provides leadership in conjunction with the principals and school-based athletic directors in maintaining and implementing an educationally sound philosophy for the program. The District Athletic Coordinator oversees all aspects of the district athletics' program, including hiring processes for coaches both paid and volunteer, scheduling, budget preparation (PRC 882), compliance and facility management. In addition, assists in developing the athletics' department vision, mission statement, and program philosophy around key district/school components of rigor, relevance, and relationships. The Athletic Coordinator is the link between the school district's athletics program and the community at large, and/or is directly responsible for the management of the district's interscholastic athletic programs. Ensures compliance with all NCHSAA requirements. Provides overall leadership, direction, supervision and coordination of the comprehensive high school driver education program. Coordinates maintenance and inventory of the driver education fleet. Manages the driver education budget (PRC 012). Recruits and supervises school based driver education teachers and staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Athletics:

  • Provides information, resources, training, and support for effective strategies and technologies for the quality education of student athletes.

  • Works with the schools to develop a District-wide athletic program to ensure uniformity and coordination.

  • Develops athletic policies with input from district staff, principals, athletic directors, and coaches.

  • Serves as the District liaison for athletics to the North Carolina Department of Education and the NC High School Athletics Association (NCHSAA).

  • Maintains a close working relationship with District and school personnel to ensure information exchange, coordination, and support for the decision-making process and the collection of feedback concerning services.

  • Promotes professional growth and enrichment by encouraging athletic directors and coaches to be members of professional athletic organizations and to participate in approved clinics, conferences, and required compliance seminars.

  • Provides athletic assistance and guidance to schools in interpretation of Board policy and the NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules.

  • Ensures appropriate eligibility requirements are followed for student athletes.

  • Assists coaches in keeping abreast of current practices, programs, legal issues, and care and prevention of athletic injuries.

  • Serves as a consultant within the District on all athletic construction projects.

  • Coordinates the establishment of admission prices for all athletic events.

  • Coordinates the provisions for physical examinations for all athletes with local community agencies and organizations.

  • Coordinates the CPR requirements for all district athletic staff.

  • Ensures an Emergency Action Plan is in place at each school's Athletic Program.

  • Maintains an accounting system of the athletics program (including district funds, student fees, gate receipts, expenditure record, and pupil participation and accounting).

  • Advises and cooperates with all athletic and activity-related booster clubs.

  • Attends State Athletic Directors' meetings to help develop policies in governing athletic activities.

  • Plans and coordinates the annual district Athletics Banquet, All Recognition Programs, and Scholarship Opportunities for Athletics (Craig Memorial Scholarship).

  • Communicates with parents and the community on all matters relating to athletic activities.

  • Attends and assists with the management of middle school and high school athletic events.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletics:

  • Encourages schools to provide athletic opportunities to all students. Establish annual athletic program goals and objectives.

  • Coordinates the provisions of athletic training with local community agencies and organizations.

  • Monitors the District athletic program for compliance with gender equity.

  • Assists in developing and implementing District athletic budget and stays current with coaching supplement salary schedule.

  • Seeks assistance and support for the financing of the athletic program.

  • Coordinates the purchase of athletic equipment.

  • Provides schools with necessary leadership that will enable all schools to develop their individual athletic programs to the fullest extent.

  • Prepares and submits required reports and maintains appropriate records.

  • Assists in writing grant proposals and manages grants as needed.

  • Conducts monthly athletic director meetings for the purpose of program planning and coordination.

  • Fosters good community relationships by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic programs.

  • Develops a District-wide athletic program policy and guidebook and updates annually.

  • Maintains a copy of the current conference constitution and by-laws of all NCHSAA publications.

  • Assists the regional coordinators of NCHSAA with state tournaments.

  • Maintains and updates a weekly calendar of district athletic events.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Driver Education:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, rules and procedures related to driver's education requirement

  • Considerable knowledge of the Rockingham County Schools curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum

  • Considerable knowledge of the facilities, materials and equipment utilized in the driver's education program, special events, and related specialties

  • Considerable knowledge of the potential hazards associated with driver's education and student drivers

  • Considerable knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations

  • Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of driver's education programs in the schools

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration

  • Skill in training, coaching and counseling program participants

  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education

  • Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum

  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and the community

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

  • Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs

  • Ability to maintain routine administrative reports and records

  • Ability to plan and supervise the activities required to execute the driver's education program

  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing

  • Ability to communicate and establish rapport, understanding and confidence with program participants

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Driver Education:

  • Coordinate the Rockingham County Driver Education Program.

  • Oversee the monthly Driver Education Budget and Oversee the Yearly budget with the Executive Director of Secondary Instruction

  • Establish behind the wheel work schedules per driver education teacher

  • Act as a liaison between Driver Education Instructors (paraprofessionals/contractors) and other individuals

  • Disseminate pertinent information regarding the Drivers Education program to paraprofessionals/contractors

  • Meet and confer with the Instructors to review and plan for future sessions

  • Develop, maintain and distribute a weekly schedule of school site visits

  • Submit monthly and quarterly reports as required for the program

  • Ensure the proper collection and reporting of fees received from students registering in the program at the beginning of each session

  • Ensure that all students participating in the program have a valid NC learner's permit

  • Complete random reviews of Temporary Drivers Licenses and all other forms associated with state mandated Dropout Prevention/Driver's License legislation

  • Publicize classroom dates for students

  • Create schedules for all sessions including summer school

  • Assist with revising the summer school guide

  • Conduct an annual inventory of all equipment and materials associated with the program; order and distribute equipment as needed

  • Ensure that all vehicles have the proper registration, insurance and emergency cards prior to use

  • Assist with vehicle procurement, assignment, and rotation, if applicable

  • Assist with the acquisition of special equipment to modify a vehicle as needed

  • Maintain maintenance records of vehicles and notify paraprofessionals/contractors when vehicles are due for preventive maintenance and other needs

  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, school board policy and administrative regulations

  • Collect and review lesson plans and route sheets from each paraprofessional/contractor

  • Review all required paperwork completed by paraprofessionals/contractors to ensure accuracy of information

  • Observe paraprofessionals/contractors and submit feedback to Assistant Superintendent for review

  • Assist with the planning and delivery of professional development activities; provide training and instructional assistance to all paraprofessionals/contractors

  • Assist with the planning of mandatory meetings for buildings administrators, department chairs, and paraprofessionals/contractors to include summer school

  • Promote and assist with the driver's education programs such as Dropout Prevention/Driver's License legislation

  • Maintain district-wide records for implementing this legislation, monitoring grades and dropout status of secondary students and informing parents of students' status

  • Schedule and conduct reviews of student appeals under the legislation

  • Work with school principals regarding best practices for implementing the programs at each school

  • Monitor and oversee the entire driver education program working in close relationship with our outside contractors as necessary

  • When dealing with outside contractors, provide scheduling of classes and instructors, maintain records and supplies, and monitor payment to contractors

  • Monitor budget expenditures

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for K-12 Curriculum & Instruction
