Annual Rate: $76,953.48 - $98,214.48

Exempt

  • Not Eligible for Overtime

Benefits-eligible & 401(a) payment equal to 3% of base salary.

Summary:

As an experienced professional and under general supervision, assists the PARCS Department with planning, organizing, developing, recommending, evaluating and implementing aquatic programming, community events; supporting department initiatives through research and document preparation; creating presentations; organizing team efforts to develop and implement programs; and tracking and reporting program progress.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinates, promotes, administers, and evaluates Aquatics activities, special events and other programming for the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Community Services Department.

  • Prepares, organizes, maintains and schedules activities or programs in assigned area of responsibility.

  • Recruits, supervises, schedules, trains, coaches and motivates staff in a variety of different scenarios including water rescue, aquatic programming and special events

  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities to assure maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Implements, evaluates, removes, and/or modifies program activities to meet diverse community needs and interests.

  • Assumes duties as lifeguard, swim instructor or other positions as needed.

  • Coordinates marketing efforts in the community regarding classes, services, programming and events including but not limited to flyers, social media and news releases.

  • Assists in the preparation and tracking of grant applications and sponsorships initiatives.

  • Processes payroll data and registration program implementation information.

  • Assists in the preparation of the budget and purchasing activities and monitors expenditures; submits budget recommendations.

  • Assists with administering performance and rental contracts.

  • Develops schedules for facilities and appropriate activity supervision.

  • Prepares a variety of safety and inspection reports and maintain records.

  • Responds to requests or makes appropriate referrals verbally and through email.

  • Maintains positive working relationships with City employees, contract workers, community groups, agencies, school officials, the media, and the public.

  • Provides courteous, high-quality service to members of the public by personally responding to requests or making appropriate referrals.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of:

  • Cultural and social needs of the community.

  • Knowledge of program content for specialized community aquatic activities.

  • Principles and procedures of financial record keeping, reporting, and software applications.

  • Personnel management principles, practices, and techniques, including best practices for employee selection, supervision, evaluation, and training.

  • Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint techniques.

  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision, in a team environment and with all levels of employees and management; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and willingness to give assistance to co-workers.

  • Ability to interpret and carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to work independently under pressure; proactive thinker/self-starter; ability to identify methods to maximize service effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Ability to work extended hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • General office equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree, with emphasis in Business, Public Administration, Recreation or closely related field; three (3) years of experience in the field; OR any equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

  • Ability to work long hours, weekends and holidays

  • The below listed Aquatics Certificates are desirable and will be required to obtain within 6 months of hire

  • Lifeguard Instructor Trainer

  • Water Safety Instructor

  • Lifeguard

  • CPR/First Aid/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor

Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid CA driver's license

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites; incumbents will be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting:

  • To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

  • Work is also performed outdoors and requires the ability to:

  • Withstand the heat and cold of the elements, walk moderate distances and work for long periods

  • Vision requirements:

  • See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
