  • Takes the lead in the pre-claim investigations, which may involve locating and interviewing witnesses, taking witness statements, gathering documents and evidence, creating case investigation notebooks, organizing documents, and creating a chronology of facts, and perform initial case assessments.

  • Notifies identified schools/departments and advises them of mandated time constraints for submitting responsive documents to document requests, subpoenas, affidavits and motions and monitor the progress of same;

  • Compiles, analyzes, and prepares documents received from schools/departments for responsiveness, completeness, and confidentiality and notify assigned attorneys regarding potential confidentiality issues.

  • Drafts legal documents and identifies persons with knowledge, gathers information, materials, documents, reports, and evidence, which is necessary to respond to complaints and/or litigation matters and maintains pleadings indexes and filing pleadings with the court.

  • Serves as a liaison between members of the legal team and third parties.

  • Drafts and prepares reports, correspondence, legal memoranda, responses to formal and informal complaints and other documents necessary for the delivery of legal services to all District departments and campuses and assists attorneys with same.

  • Develop and maintain legal services database in Legal Files software.

  • Gathers and organizes data and information needed for settlement/resolution agreements and related releases and assists at all scheduled hearings.

  • Creates, evaluates, monitors cases and processes such as standard reporting processes, generate reports and analyze results of legal service efforts by monitoring, tracking, and entering completion of internal and outside attorney assignments in Legal Files to evaluate, monitor, and improve legal process for effectiveness.

  • Respond to citizen, staff, and possibly parent inquiries and/or complaints.

  • Notarize affidavits and other documents, as necessary.

  • Keeps abreast of changes to federal law, state law, and local policy that impact legal services.

  • Demonstrates high quality customer service, cultural competence in interactions with others; is respectful of co-workers; communicates and acts as a team player; promotes teamwork. Responds and acts appropriately in confrontational situations; builds rapport/relationship within the organization and outside of the organization.

  • Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct and work ethic within the organization and with outside counsel.

  • Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university preferred with major coursework in a related field.

  • Two years of experience in a legal office and/or law firm preferred.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to collaborate with other functional areas.

  • Strong drafting, research, and assessment skills.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and organization.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to analyze federal, state and local compliance requirements for school districts.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work and cross train in other areas of need in the legal office.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted. Forward difficult and non-routine inquiries or request to appropriate level for resolution.

  • Ability to give and receive information such as options, technical direction, instructions, and reporting results.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and work on concurrent projects.
