Position Summary:

The Office of Student Life includes the Brower Student Center, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Recreation & Wellness, Student Involvement and reports to the AVP for Student Development within the Division of Student Affairs. Student Life is responsible for building affinity for the institution through the cultivation of student engagement activities among the student body. The Sport Programs Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Student Life.

Promoting an inclusive campus environment where all students have a personal sense of belonging and are active, engaged members who contribute to the TCNJ and greater community. Student Life serves as a center for experiential student learning and development outside of the classroom; builds and supports effective student organizations and student events; develops emerging student leaders and guides mature student leaders; and implements large-scale student entertainment programs.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Life, the Coordinator of Sport Programs is primarily responsible for leading the competitive sport branch of the department which includes the sport club program. The Coordinator of Sport Programs is responsible for the planning, organization, implementation, and supervision of the 25 sport clubs recognized by the TCNJ Sport Club Council.

The Coordinator of Sport Programs coordinates E-Sports and open recreation opportunities for the student body, manages the website, schedules all RecWell events in campus-wide calendar software, plans large-scale RecWell events and numerous special events throughout the year.

Through programming different sport programs at a high level, the coordinator develops a welcoming environment that fosters a wellness community through engagement of students; enhancing their wellbeing while facilitating student engagement beyond the classroom.

Main Responsibilities:

Sport Club Administration

  • Provide leadership and administration for a comprehensive Sport Club Program with approximately 850 participants and 25 clubs with as many as 50 members. This includes on-campus facility scheduling and troubleshooting, club officer training, hiring per diem athletic trainers, promoting and marketing the sport club program and assessing the student participants' satisfaction and development.

  • Establish, monitor, and assess health and safety protocols for sport club participation and update/distribute the sport club handbook including travel regulations and safety equipment requirements. Utilize best practices in risk management to determine the need to contract/schedule all required safety personnel at practices and games. Contract/Schedule Lions EMS to ensure appropriate coverage at all on campus sport club home contests.

  • Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of sport club governing body requirements to create, modify, and enforce sport club coaching qualifications and team regulations. Facilitate coach agreements and support clubs in evaluating coaches' ability and adherence to sport club expectations.

  • Advise the Sport Club Council, the regulatory body for sport clubs. Support student facilitation of the Council's mission of to promote sportsmanship, leadership, wellness, competitive spirit, cooperation, and fun among recognized club sports. Provide support in ensuring a fair sport club Council Executive Committee election process.

Supervision

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate sport program student staff and sport program supervisors.

  • Train student staff in specific sport rules and risk reduction protocol, advise on best practices in officiating specific sports, and develop/teach conflict resolution strategies.

  • Develop and train student staff in proper risk management practices and emergency response and ensure accident/incident reports are completed; maintain documentation related to all accidents/incidents. Integrate staff professional development and leadership development into training of student staff.

Administration and Budget

  • Advise the fair, ethical, and equitable distribution and use of the sport club council's $184,000 budget. Support Sport Club Council in developing and monitoring yearly budgets and supporting club fundraising.

  • Update Recreation and Wellness content on the Student Life webpage

Schedule and request facility access for all Recreation and Wellness area programs and activities and input schedules into Book.it (EMS)

  • Maintain records, prepare and analyze data and statistical reports, evaluations and participant surveys

  • Approve bi-weekly Student Payroll for all Sport Club student employees

Other Programming

  • Advocate for and schedule open recreation opportunities across all recreation facilities. Advertise and communicate these opportunities to all/targeted TCNJ students.

  • Partner with Brower Student Staff to create and implement tournament-style events in the BSC game room. Train BSC staff and student staff on rules and processes.

  • Coordinate, plan, and execute E-Sports tournaments. The Coordinator will work with internal and external stakeholders (Lions Gaming Club) to create a unique and engaging experience for attendees and participants.

  • Plan department-wide events, usually one major event in each semester, as well as smaller events throughout the year, managing all aspects in terms of planning, budgeting, staffing, coordination with vendors and vendor contracts, etc.

  • Partner with Student Involvement and other internal stakeholders to offer Commuter Programs through the year, focusing on proving recreation opportunities for the commuter student body

Other Duties

  • Coordinate and teach American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED classes for members of the TCNJ community.

  • Additional duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Student Life. Campus leadership and volunteer duties, and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university

  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification

  • Experience training and evaluating student employees

  • Administration of a comprehensive collegiate Sport Club Program

  • Knowledge of sport risk management oversight in college or related setting

  • Ability to manage stressful situations with tact and diplomacy, and to use sound judgment and initiative

  • Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Sport or Recreation Management, Athletic Administration, Higher Education Administration or related degree

  • Active Involvement within NIRSA or affiliated organizations

  • Knowledge of Sports Officiating

  • American Red Cross First Aid/AED/CPR Instructor Certification

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. for moving equipment.

  • Requires accessing multiple locations across campus facilities used for Sports Clubs

  • This position works across multiple venues including offices, sport facilities/venues, outdoor venues, fields, indoor loud venues, and is required to walk to all of them
