As part of the Institutional Marketing Department under direction of the Strategic Communications and Public Relations Director, the Public Relations - Editor/Writer will be responsible for the development and editing of creative, editorial, news, web, magazine, blog and other copy that support the college's internal and external communications efforts. Primarily supports Director of Strategic Communications by assisting with the development and implementation of PR communication plans, including: writing and editing news stories, creating publicity materials, coordinating projects aimed at disseminating information and otherwise publicizing Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), its programs, activities, students, faculty and staff; maintaining media contact and print frequency databases; generating PR Activities Reports; and representing the College at campus and community events. Also required to serve a portfolio of internal college clients to ensure communications needs are met.

Works as part of Institutional Marketing team in support of the college mission and the department's goals. Responsible for executing the comprehensive PR/communications plan and supporting the college marketing plan and key institutional messages, including coordinating messaging with college social media efforts. Responsible for assuring quality of departmental messaging distributed to all-subscribers of the college email service, including employees and students. Delivers key and routine messaging via the college intranet to students and employees helps update the College online master calendar of events.

May occasionally fill in as the college's spokesperson as needed.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Serves as the editor and primary creator of SLCC Magazine, both in print and digital form.

  • Responsible for all visual content for the magazine and plays a key-role in writing and coordinating content to be published in the bi-annual magazine.

  • Develops and edits creative, editorial, news, web, blog, social media, and other copy that support the College's internal and external communications efforts.

  • Serves a portfolio of internal college clients to ensure communications needs are met.

  • Helps execute the comprehensive PR/communications plan and support the College marketing plan and key institutional messages, including coordinating messaging with college social media efforts.

  • Responsible for assuring quality of departmental messaging distributed to all-subscribers of the college email service, including employees and students.

  • Represent the College at campus and community events as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English, public relations or a related field.

  • Four (4) to six (6) years' experience in professional communications, journalism, marketing, advertising and/or public relations.

Comprehensive knowledge of editing and writing, including planning, directing and production of content for both print and digital communication platforms.

Valid driver's license. Position will occasionally travel and work outside of normal business hours to other campuses and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in higher education communications.

Experience in copywriting for campaigns and print publications, with an emphasis on experience in magazine publishing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to think creatively and critically, communicate effectively with a broad range of internal and external constituents, and demonstrate the ability to provide direction and work collaboratively with creative and content-development teams to produce quality work and products that elevate the college.

  • Ability to write effective headlines and body copy for a diverse set of publications, with a sound understanding of marketing principles and best practices that succinctly communicate complex ideas and engage target audiences.

  • Ability to develop and edit original content for both print and digital publications and adapt copy to fit diverse communication platforms including editorial, news/PR-related, online and promotional platforms.

  • Ability to create web/social-ready and public relations-oriented content to be integrated into the college's strategic marketing and communications initiatives, in an effort to elevate, build awareness of and encourage enrollment at SLCC.

  • Must have practical knowledge of traditional media, social media, online and traditional research techniques.

  • Ability to successfully and consistently complete detail-oriented work, including writing, editing, proofing and management reporting.

  • Ability to connect with people, be curious about the stories that they have to tell and evaluate the value of those narratives to the college.

  • Possess a sound understanding of magazine publishing best practices.

  • Excellent writing, grammar, editing and proofreading skills, with a sound understanding of AP Style editing and writing protocols.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Proficient with MS Office, Adobe Suite and Associated Press style.

  • Play a proactive role in public relations efforts for the college, including strategic planning, in-depth reporting, and writing of comprehensive content for a wide range of communications channels.

  • Work with a variety of departments and projects and assist the college in developing and achieving communications goals.

  • Possess a general understanding of SEO and social media best practices.

  • Must be skilled in interpersonal communications and flexible across a wide variety of social and professional situations.

  • Manage deadlines and coordinate multiple projects without direct daily supervision; be able to work on tight deadlines.

  • Handle sensitive information and situations with utmost discretion. Must be calm, effective, efficient and professional in crisis situations.

  • Organization and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to write quickly, have positive influential social interactions, and have polished communications skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
