Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is Utah's largest college with the most diverse student body. SLCC's award-winning Orientation & Student Success department supports this mission by preparing new students to thrive in higher education. The OSS Coordinator will be part of this team and work collaboratively to implement elements of a comprehensive first-year program.

Under general supervision, the OSS coordinator will specifically be responsible for coordinating welcome week events, implementing new student orientation programs, maintaining the online orientation, working with community partners in neighboring school districts to create a college-going pipeline, and developing content for the office's online presence to enhance engagement with incoming students. The coordinator will also supervise part-time staff. Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Implementing New Student Orientation Programs:

  • Orient individual and groups of students in understanding the requirements for all SLCC areas of study and educational pathways.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with various departments in the Student Success, Enrollment Management, Institutional Marketing, and Student Services units.

  • Work with faculty, staff, and peer leaders to advance the retention, success, and completion goals of OSS and SLCC.

  • Explain degree prerequisites, course sequencing, course modalities, registration holds, and other enrollment information to new students.

Partner with School Districts:

  • Partner with area high schools to increase the enrollment and success of their students in SLCC.

  • Communicate information with campus and community partners clearly and effectively.

  • Lead the expansion of SLCC Days orientations within feeder high school districts.

  • Review and create an interactive 2-day orientation specifically designed for, and addressing the needs of, graduating high school seniors (first-years and students with CE credits).

  • Collaborate with campus partners to connect SLCC days participants with relevant support services, clubs and cohorts.

  • Track SLCC Days participants enrollment, retention and satisfaction rates.

  • Manage a programming budget for SLCC Days orientations and advise supervisor on the long-term needs of the program.

Maintaining the Online Orientation Course:

  • Work with the assistant director to update the online orientation every semester, ensuring information presented is accurate.

  • Review the effectiveness of the online orientation process.

  • Troubleshoot errors and work with IT to ensure a smooth delivery of the online orientation content and information.

  • Work with the OSS team to update scripts and videos used for the online orientation.

  • Work with key campus partners to develop tutorials for new students to navigate SLCC better.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, ethnic studies, or related field.

  • Two (2) or more years of full-time, direct professional experience

Part-time experience may be substituted on a prorated basis (i.e., two years of related part-time experience equals one year of full-time experience)

Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement (i.e., two years of education above the minimum requirement equals one year of full-time experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in a related field.

  • Experience working in a higher education environment, particularly in two-year schools.

  • Bilingual or multilingual ability.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

An OSS Coordinator Must:

  • Motivate, encourage, mentor, and teach new students how to navigate higher education.

  • Create a welcoming environment for new students and their families.

  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

  • Articulate the purpose of general education classes and teach students how to register for these courses.

  • Feel comfortable using technology, including social media, to market events and build community.

  • Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.

  • Participate in ongoing professional development sessions.

All Candidates Should Possess the Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of individuals.

  • Deliver high-quality presentations and lead discussions with large and small groups of students in new student orientations or in classrooms with high enrollments of first-year students.

  • Provide excellent customer service and, when necessary, provide one-on-one consultations.

  • Work collaboratively with others in the OSS team and our campus partners.

  • Organize, process, and disseminate large amounts of information accurately.

  • Learn the requirements of SLCC services, major prerequisites, programs, and degree options, as well as college resources and processes (e.g., admissions, registration, financial aid, placement, and orientation).

  • Determine the needs of new students and work with others to implement services to meet these needs through orientation programs, transition activities, and new student tutorials.

  • Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity.

  • Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SLCC's student information system (i.e., Banner).

  • Prioritize assignments and plan and carry projects to completion.

  • Learn quickly, work well under pressure, and work ethically with confidential information.

  • Advocate for all students with an emphasis on new students.

  • Work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.

  • Ability to supervise part-staff.

  • Quickly grasp student development and advising theory to better serve students and support OSS programming.

  • Communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
