In alignment with community engagement values and to support student success, Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, & Community Engagement provides basic needs resources. The Coordinator for the Bruin Pantry oversees the operations of pantry sites across five Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campuses. Primary responsibilities include the development of the pantry program, planning and implementation, day-to-day operations, budget oversight, supervision of pantry staff, distribution of resources across the Bruin pantry network, and referrals to on and off campus resources. As a manager of a multi-site network, this role coordinates logistics, data collection and reporting, resolves maintenance and equipment issues, and maintains relationships with campus partners and community-based organizations. The success of this role is measured by the successful daily operation of the network, analysis of visitor demographics, and upholding key partnerships with Utah Food Bank and other programs that support the pantry network.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Operations of the Bruin Pantry Network

  • Promote, hire, and develop staff supporting the pantry network which includes part-time staff and student leaders (Campus Internship Program, work study, Peer Leaders). Ensure the equal division of responsibilities across the network (Taylorsville, South City, Jordan, West Valley Center, and Herriman campuses).

  • Collaborate with co-Coordinator for Bruin Pantry to ensure effective management of the 5-campus network. Responsibly and effectively share resources and responsibilities as a highly-coordinated and unified system. Many processes should be aligned across the network.

  • Coordinate weekly delivery and receiving of food from community partners, including perishable food items that need to be refrigerated.

  • Coordinate distribution and redistribution of food donations from main pantry location, located at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus, to other campuses and sites (South City Campus, Jordan Campus, West Valley Center, Herriman Campus).

  • Coordinate weekly distribution hours across network of pantries.

  • Develop and implement strategic outreach and promotion to students including highlights of pantry goods, foods, hygiene, and other household items.

  • Respond to and resolve emergency situations such as maintenance issues to maintain operational standards.

  • Refer students to other internal and external partners and resources.

  • When assisting with daily operations such as food deliveries, Coordinator will lift up to 50lbs and make repetitive movements.

Organizational Leadership:

  • Maintain accurate and timely data and reports pertaining to the utilization of the pantry network. Share data effectively with campus and community partners.

  • Present clear and concise information in written reports and verbal representation including data collection, building relationships with campus partners.

  • Maintain a partnership with Utah Food Bank and connect with other programs internal and external to the college. Ensure partnership standards with Utah Food Bank and other community partners including standards, signage, inventory management, etc. are met.

  • Communicate effectively and maintain good working relationships effectively with peers and students across the college.

  • Develop partnerships with Thayne Center programs and college partnerships to both increase pantry visibility and create engagement pipelines into key programs.

  • Participate in and contribute meaningfully to team meetings and Thayne Center's programs.

  • Attend meetings and programs on multiple campus locations and sites.

Case Management for Food Insecurity

  • Maintain a campus-wide case management program for students who need access to food. Document interactions and support via the MySuccess platform in a timely and detailed manner.

  • Hold 1:1 conversations and making connections to resources with students.

  • Conduct follow-up contacts in response to student's needs and case management support.

  • Provide comprehensive and cohesive services, information, and programs to all SLCC students for food insecurity

Budget Management

  • Ethically and thoroughly oversee budgets connected to Bruin Pantry network operations through multiple sources including donor dollars.

  • As needed, prepare reports and data regarding pantry expenses.

  • Contribute to donor, sponsor, and media requests to increase fiscal and community support for the pantry network.

  • Uphold responsibilities outlined in the cardholder agreement and purchasing card training. Establish and maintain a yearly operating budget.

  • Ethically distribute donated goods to address food insecurity among students, including gift cards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (Social Sciences, Humanities, Communication, Sociology, Education, Nutrition, Health, Social Services Delivery, Management, Logistics, or related field).

  • Two (2) years of direct, full-time, paid professional experience in college student affairs, non-profit, or social services industries.

Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Cultural and Social Studies, Consumer and Community Studies, Social Sciences, Food Systems, Ecology, or Ecojustice Education

  • Strong knowledge of and proven experience with:

  • Food insecurity/sustainability

  • Assessment - using data software to disaggregate demographic data and share visitor usage data.

  • Bilingual or multilingual.

  • Management and logistical experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to recruit, hire, train, and supervise students for a peer leader role. Create and implement an agreement of peer leader responsibilities. Document and address performance issues. Maintain accurate rosters and contact information for engaged students. This task is performed three times a year.

  • Ability to recruit, hire, train, and supervise part-time staff across multiple sites. Ensure there is consistent execution of operations by staff across the pantry network. Document and address performance issues, improvement, and assist in goal setting.

  • Knowledge of effective marketing and recruiting strategies. Promoting programming and resources to ensure programmatic visibility among student across the institution.

  • Knowledge of student leadership development theories and practices.

  • Proven skills in program coordination, including program management, needs assessment, strategic planning, procedure development, evaluation, critical thinking, programmatic development, participant learning outcomes, and budgeting.

  • Experience in creating agendas and incorporate multiple sources of information to facilitate meetings. Plan and lead trainings and developmental conversations.

  • Ability to work successfully whether independent or collaboratively. Sets and meets deadlines individually and with a team. Supervisor may be remote or at a different campus location.

  • Excellent written communication, including email and writing external facing documents.

  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated ability for public speaking. Tailoring communication to different constituents including students, staff, faculty, and community partners.

  • Strong technology skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, and other telecommunication platforms. Creation of surveys, forms, and use of an online engagement platform.

  • Experience tracking expenses and following a budget.

  • Flexibility and ability to adapt quickly.

  • Strong decision-making, problem solving, and collaborative partnership skills.

  • Ability to build strategic relationships and connect with campus partners.

  • Ability to support office coverage at multiple SLCC sites and campuses.

  • Ability to maintain relationships and operational standards set by essential community partners: Utah Food Bank, Utah Food Rescue, etc.

  • Knowledge of inventory management, food safety, and nutrition basics.

  • Knowledge of food systems and food insecurity and the impact on student retention and completion.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ability to complete Utah state defensive driving training and drive authorized vehicles.

  • Able to comfortably lift 50 pounds and make repetitive movements.

Special Instructions

Applicant must have scheduling flexibility to accommodate attendance at occasionally early morning meetings, late evenings and weekend programs, retreats and conferences at multiple sites and campuses.
