Serve as one of the primary School Certifying Officials (SCO) at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Veterans Services Center. Position is responsible for certifying all degrees in both college credit classes and Salt Lake Technical Center (SLTC) programs.

Position is responsible for the administration of educational benefits for the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and the Federal Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance. Assist all Veteran students and dependents attending class at all SLCC campuses and Online campus with all GI Bill education benefit questions. Responsible to ensure student reports are submitted to VA for graduation, probation and suspension.

Campus location and office responsibility may vary depending on needs.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Coordinate services available to Veterans on all SLCC campuses, leading a campus environment addressing the unique needs of all veteran students.

  • Oversee all daily functions and services provided in Veterans Services. Campus and inner office location and assignments may vary depending on needs.

  • Collaborate closely with numerous partners across the College to support the admission, orientation, financial, enrollment, advising, disability resources, health, and mental health needs of veteran students attending SLCC.

  • Ensure strong support for student veterans and community volunteers serving at SLCC.

  • Plan, organize, implement and supervise all processes and aspects of student veterans education claim processing, ensuring accurate claims and payment resolution.

  • Ensure prompt and accurate reporting to VA for graduation, probation and termination of all using VA benefits.

  • Ensure all aspects of Federal and State Tuition assistance is working to include, uploading catalog info, support to students using TA, pre-authorization, billing and grades per semester.

  • Communicate effectively with College administration and offices; Local, State and National Veterans organizations, educational, and workforce service organizations in role as student liaison and representative of Veterans Services.

  • Establish good rapport and partnerships for the good of the SLCC veteran students.

  • Develop strategic relationships throughout the College and the community to develop more seamless experiences for veteran students and streamline communications between veterans support services.

  • Ensure all documentation, certification, amendments, termination and graduation is accurately and timely reported to the Department of Veterans Affairs in accordance with federal guidelines.

  • Plan, organize and implement services and events at all SLCC campuses (campus location may vary depending on needs) for veterans and dependents to establish good rapport and relationships and encourage their educational success.

  • Research veteran-students Last Dates of Attendance on college Banner system, or by contacting faculty by email. Report changes in student's eligibility to the VA in a timely manner.

  • Maintain other lists designed to monitor veteran's academic success.

  • Advise students of regulations regarding use of veterans' benefits, requirements, and SLCC policies and procedures.

  • Resolve problems and concerns in a timely and fair manner.

  • Update SCO knowledge by attending local and national trainings (when offered) and mandatory workshops to stay current on VA regulations Enrollment Services matters and customer service concepts.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field.

Trade off 1:1 in experience/education requirement.

Part-time experience will be considered on a prorated basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of two (2) years experience as a VA Certifying Official.

Knowledge with institutions of higher education and their policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:

  • An understanding of issues faced by student veterans.

  • Knowledge of veterans' education benefits requirements

  • Enrollment Manager (Previously known as VA Once).

  • College policies including registration/records/admissions operations and procedures.

  • Complex rules and regulations of the Department of Veterans Affairs as it relates to Education Benefits.

  • Federal and State laws regarding Veterans and Veterans Educational Benefits.

  • College Banner computer system.

  • Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures working with Veterans and dependents and awareness of related needs and resources available.

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA).

  • An understanding of Online services for use in a college setting.

ABILITY TO:

  • Engage in the college's mission and values.

  • Maintain familiarity with and adapt to ever changing state and federal VA legislation pertaining to veteran students and educational benefits.

  • Quickly retain and implement changes in laws and regulations.

  • Routinely resolve questions or problems independently using good judgment.

  • Communicate effectively with College administration, office staff, faculty and students.

  • Upon department approval, take personal responsibility for professional development.

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate projects and activities effectively.

  • Effectively work independently with little supervision and meet deadlines.

  • Use Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook.

  • Work effectively under pressure and resolve issues amid difficulties.

  • Detail oriented and organizational skills a must.

  • Experience with computers and education database systems i.e., Banner and degree audit systems.

  • Communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Attend mandatory trainings and workshops to stay current on VA regulations.
