This co-op opportunity will involve material and process development for the Alcoa Technical Center. The work will potentially include but not be limited to ceramic powder synthesis, powder processing, materials characterization, materials processing development, materials performance testing. This co-op opportunity will span summer 2019 and either the spring or fall semester.

During this co-op, the candidate will be assigned a moderately complex project designed to contribute technologically to the candidate's assigned group. This project will involve research of current technology, assistance in experimental design, execution of experiment and the collection, organization and presentation of data.

The candidate will be accountable for the defined project as assigned by their supervisor. The work will culminate in an internal formal written report authored or co-authored by the student.

Basic Qualifications:

A sophomore level or above student in chemical engineering, materials science, ceramic engineering or science discipline with strong organization, math and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

A junior level or above student in chemical engineering, materials science, ceramic engineering or science discipline with strong organization, math and writing skills.

Minimum Education Required: High School or GED

Minimum Years of Experience: Entry Level 0 years of experience

Primary Purpose of the Job: This position will report to the Manager of Engineering Resources within Central Engineering and is responsible for providing electrical engineering and control system support in the areas of troubleshooting, design, procurement, construction, and implementation of control systems and equipment for production, R&D processes, and infrastructure at ATC while adhering and executing to a well defined scope, schedule and budget The incumbent will work closely with Project Engineers, Maintenance, Contractors, Researchers and Operators to develop, deploy and maintain control systems in the operation of R&D processes and equipment at the Arconic Technology Center The incumbent will work closely with Engineers and Researchers in the development of scope, specification, cost estimates, design and execution of R&D and capital projects Major Activities / Key Challenges: * Supporting and maintaining control and data acquisition systems for existing equipment and processes including but not limited to casting, powder making, roll milling, and furnaces * Develop and deploy new control and data acquisition systems for equipment and processes * Work closely with Engineers, Researchers, EHS, Procurement, and Project Manager/Coordinator to ensure timely response to Engineering Project and Operation Support Requests * Work with other Engineers in devising execution strategy of the project and engaging in the technical discussion * Accountable to complete operational support tasks and project work packages by committed delivery dates * Documenting and managing changes to software, electrical drawings, and process instrumentation diagrams, scope, specification, budget and schedule through formal change management plan * Electrically qualified in execution of low voltage work * Devise scope of work, drawings and or sketches to electricians and or contractors and directing safe completion of work * Support electrical variance process by reviewing electrical drawings equipment both purchased and unique R&D designs for proper electrical design including grounding, overload protection and electrical safety issues * Contribute to ATC Electrical Safety Committee to maintain policy's and standards includes working knowledge of NFPA, NEC an OSHA requirements * Participate in project team meetings and provide positive impact on project performance metrics and overall transparency of projects * Participate in reviews of electrical PEHSR pertaining to automated control systems * Provides innovative solutions * Ability to execute tasks by splitting time in the office and in the field i.e. troubleshooting and maintaining existing processes and equipment; overseeing process modifications; equipment installations Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education: * Working knowledge of temperature controllers, VFD's, PLC's, HMI's and data acquisition systems * PLC programming in ladder logic and function block * HMI programming such as FactoryTalk, or equivalent * Primary knowledge of Rockwell Automation Logix PLC's, HMI's and VFD's * Working knowledge of Siemens PLC derivatives * Ability to work with and devise electrical schematics and Process and Instrumentation Diagram * Work with Design Group to maintain electrical control schematics and power * Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments while executing simultaneously * Strong critical, conceptual, and analytical thinking skills * Strong collaboration, decision-making, computer, written and verbal communication skills * Adept at functioning within a high performing cross functional project teams * Demonstrates a willingness to engage in technical discussion * Bachelors Degree in an electrical or process control curriculum Qualifications Basic Qualifications: * Bachelors Degree in an applied electrical or process control curriculum from an accredited institution * Minimum 5 years of working as an electrical engineer. * PLC programming in ladder logic, function block and HMI programming. * Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
