Overview

Established in 1914, MSA is the world's leading manufacturer of safety products designed to protect people throughout the world. Working alongside experienced engineers, co-ops have a unique opportunity to apply their academic learning to products that protect lives in communities around the world. The Supplied Air Respirator (SAR) co-op will work in the Fall of 2019 to gain an appreciation and understanding of the New Product Development process, real world application of electrical hardware and software design as it pertains to embedded systems, and experience with a variety of engineering tools and techniques. The co-op will provide engineering assistance to the design team through any of the following activities:

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with electronic design tasks

  • Creating and/or reviewing basic software coding

  • Designing and setting up product validation tests and documenting test results

  • Collaborating with international associates to complete project goals

  • Gaining an awareness of budgetary, manufacturing and sourcing limitations

Qualifications

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Technical knowledge and aptitude for programming, evaluating, and testing code.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation).

  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills and a sharp attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Education and experience required:

  • Incumbent must be actively enrolled in an Electrical or Computer Engineering program (preferably at an ABET-accredited school) and have completed at least one semester of Sophomore year.

Preferred:

  • Junior status

This program has a targeted length of two years, over which time participants will complete rotations in 2-3 different New Product Development and Operations Areas. After all rotations are complete the candidate will be placed into a full-time NPD or Operations position. While reporting to the manager of the Engineering Rotation Program, the successful incumbent will have the opportunity to manage projects and provide technical support for manufacturing process development, controls, startup, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities Responsibilities: * Apply basic knowledge of electronic circuit design. • Participate on cross-functional project teams in the development of new MSA products.• Work with customers, both internal and external, to determine product design requirements.• Determine necessary product design to conform to customer needs.• Complete risk analyses, design calculations, FMEA's and design reviews, to verify that design meets or exceeds product specifications.• Develop an effective test plan, coordinate efforts to test the design, and utilize statistical methods to verify performance. • Integrate electronic designs with software, mechanical, test and manufacturing capabilities in order to ensure successful products are delivered on time while meeting agreed upon product performance specifications. Qualifications Special knowledge, skills and abilities required: This position will be responsible for electronic hardware design and will use and/or demonstrate skills in the areas noted below: * Analog and digital circuit board design and layout• Use of simulation and design development tools (LabView, SPICE, Altium designer)• Use of statistical tools and risk analysis (i.e. DFSS, FMEA)• Creative problem solving and a customer-based perspective * Domestic travel (10-15%) may be required Preferred:• Basic knowledge of embedded software• Solid writing, presentation, and verbal skills Education Required: * Bachelor of Science in Electrical engineering or relevant from an ABET-accredited institution #INDHP1 Mine Safety Appliances Company Cranberry Twp PA
