Volvo Group Trucks Operations (GTO) is the truck industrial entity within the Volvo Group responsible for Truck manufacturing, including Cab & Vehicle Assembly, Powertrain Production, Logistics Services, Parts Distribution and Remanufacturing. Hagerstown's group function is Powertrain Production. Powertrain production is one of the world's largest manufacturers of heavy-duty diesel engines for commercial vehicles. Powertrain production provides diesel engines and transmission systems to the Volvo Group Business Areas.

Position Description

We are currently looking for a student to work with our Logistics team as Logistics Engineer. The student should be prepared to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment; gaining experience and knowledge in various aspects of engineering. As a valued member of the Logistics team within GTO, the student will have the opportunity to work directly with the engineering focusing on supply chain, material handling, warehouse storage and lean manufacturing. GTO's goal is to contribute to the student's development, as well as providing an opportunity for the student to work in a business environment within the manufacturing industry. This position will report to Logistics Engineering Manager.

Position Responsibilities

  • Record, analyze and evaluate issues affecting the timely delivery of parts and inventory levels; reports on trends and other data utilized in root cause analyses affecting the timely transfer of finished goods to the customer

  • Support and develop Lean Material Flow principles and initiatives by participating in Kaizen activities throughout the facility

  • Contribute to material layout and delivery route proposals by utilizing the "Go and See" approach on the shop floor and interacting with Material Handlers

  • Develop, maintain, and update the logistics processes and delivery systems to support and enhance plant production capabilities

  • Identify time critical material handling and delivery issues and execute a resolution plan in a timely and successful manner

Co-op/Internship Education and Program Requirements

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in Supply Chain, Mathematics or Business (with Technical Focus) at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours of undergraduate studies prior to the start of the co-op

  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0

VIEW JOBS 11/8/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-06T00:00 GTO – Hagerstown, MD US Reports to Manager – Logistics Engineering Direct reports and matrix reports to the above Position No Direct Reports Role Mission This Logistics Engineer role is a critical position within the logistics' organization, as well as in the day to day cross functional teams that support multiple product lines within a manufacturing facility. The main objective of this role is to develop, manage and lead projects to improve logistics' processes, costs and production impacts while working collaboratively with members of other organizational teams (production, quality, safety, environment, etc.). Critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, data analysis, organizational and interpersonal skills will be utilized heavily on a daily basis. Scope and Influence Scope Individual contributor: Responsible for tasks or initiatives directly related to a production process, while some tasks may relate to broader functions which affect multiple production areas. In some cases, this role will require stand-alone efforts, and other times will require working within a team environment. Influence Individual contributor: The Senior Engineer – Logistics Engineering: N-6 from Volvo Group CEO, reporting to Manager – Logistics Engineering. Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities * Initiate and execute process improvements and new development projects. Manage timing and resources utilizing accepted Project Management methodology and tools. Manage handover of projects to the appropriate line organization(s) upon completion. Administer and manage the execution of assigned projects * Define project scope, goals, and deliverables that support business objectives in collaboration with the Steering Committee or stakeholders. * Maintain communication and transparency through project process with all stakeholders. * Deliver results according to the project scope, goals, and deliverables, and report issues and deviations to the Steering Committee or main project stakeholders. * Work cross functionally with production and logistics teams to implement process improvements to prevent part related disturbances to the specified production process. * Collect and analyze production disturbance/loss data in order to prioritize improvement opportunities. * Generate and maintain standardized work instructions for logistics personnel within the production process. * Apply and expand general Volvo Production System (VPS) knowledge across logistics and production functions. * Use organizational skills to maintain data, information, and time plans to effectively communicate improvement progress. * May supervise unionized workforce and/or student internships Key Targets and Results Fulfilment of financial and operational KPI's for Senior Engineer – Logistics Engineering such as: * Logistics Disturbance to production (minutes) * Logistics cost per unit (CPU) * WIP inventory * Material delivery lead time * Production Quality * Just-in-time-delivery Personal Profile Essential Educational and/or Training Qualifications and Certificates * Bachelor's Degree in Logistics or Industrial Engineering and 5+ years of experience in a similar environment OR 7+ years of related experience in a manufacturing environment. * Competencies required, taken from the Volvo Leadership competencies (see competencies below) Preferred Experience and Knowledge * Previous work within supply chain or internal manufacturing logistics * Previous exposure to automotive manufacturing or an industrial environment is important and highly considered. * Understanding and exposure to lean manufacturing principles * Experience with working in cross functional teams * AutoCAD (or other modeling software)(Not a requirement, but some experience with drafting or modeling would be helpful in this role.) * Supervisory experience Necessary technical/Functional/Language Skills/Traits * As all documentation is in English, proficiency in the English language is required.
