This position will assist with maintaining high standards of control for quality food production and service for approximately 150 Cadets. Job responsibilities include the following: 

• Provide nutritionally adequate meals meeting Federal Child Nutrition Program meal patterns.
• Follow operational procedures for efficient and effective food production and service
•  Assist with food and supplies requisition as needed, check the cost and quality of items received, and insures proper storage
• Follow Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy procedures for inventorying food, supplies and equipment. 
• Maintain an environment conducive to protecting the health and well-being of the facility's Cadets through high levels of food safety and sanitation standards, following Federal and State safety and sanitation procedures.
• Maintain a safe facility for performance of work.
• Assist supervisor with maintaining integrity and accountability of the facility Child Nutrition Program through compliance with all federal and state regulations and Department Child Nutrition policies.
• Assist with maintaining required records (production records), reports and inventories in compliance with federal and state regulations.  
• Properly uses and cares for all equipment
• Perform all duties and responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner; Communicate positively with facility staff, Cadets as well as food service staff. 
• Complies with policies and procedures of the Department
• Assumes responsibilities as designated by the Food Service Supervisor I.

The Salary Grade for this position is NC01. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase or decrease MAY result.

About The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy:

The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is a quasi-military style resident program for at risk youth in the ages of 16-18.  Sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard, the TCA mission is to redirect the efforts of young adults who have had trouble succeeding in the normal high school environment.  The intent is to give them the skills and attitude to become productive citizens in their communities.  The Academies are located in two different locations: Salemburg and New London, North Carolina. It is a 17-month program divided into two distinct phases: a five-month in-residence phase at the academies, and a twelve-month post-residential phase immediately following graduation for the in-residence phase. TCA seeks to improve the life and future employment potential of its cadets by concentrating on eight core components which are: Life Coping Skills, Academic Excellence, Responsible Citizenship, Job Skills, Service to Community, Health and Hygiene, Physical Fitness, and Leadership/Followership.

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

• Experience with methods of preparing meats, vegetables, and foods in quantity lots.

• Experience with the uses and adaptabilities of the various pieces of equipment including food processors and ovens.

• Experience inspecting incoming fresh vegetable, fruits, and meats to determine that they meet purchase order specifications.

• Experience maintaining high standards of personal cleanliness as well as food sanitation.

• Experience interpreting and following standardized recipes, while adhering to planned menus as well as specific oral and written instructions.

• Experience with cooking times and temperatures of various foods and methods of preserving their flavor, food value and safety.

• Experience planning food for a large number of persons and to requisition needed food and supply items.

• General knowledge of federal and state laws and policies relating to the Federal School Nutrition Program.

Military Experience
