CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: COOK

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to prepare and serve meals to senior citizens for the in-center and home delivered program. Prepares meals according to established menus, in compliance with sanitary and nutrition guidelines and requirements, and in proper portion allocations. Maintains a clean and sanitary work area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Prepares in-center and home-delivered meals according to a predetermined menu; ensures that the proper food portions are allotted for each meal.

Serves in-center meals to senior citizens.

Prepares food for the following day when appropriate.

Assists with cleaning the kitchen and dining facilities on a daily basis, including sweeping, mopping, and washing cooking utensils and equipment.

Maintain inventory of stock in cooler, freezer and pantry.

Assists with stocking groceries.

Maintains the order of the pantry, cooler and freezer; notifies the Food Service Manager of needed supplies.

Operates various types of kitchen and food preparation equipment including a stove, mixer, slicer, food processor, steam table, and utilizes other related tools.

Also does cost sheets, assists with menu planning, prints weekly menus, files and other office duties as needed.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Basic literacy and mathematical skills used in following instructions; communicating with co-workers and the general public; and, performing basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Serve-Safe Certificate or ability to obtain certificate within the first six (6) months of hire date.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, or pathogenic substances.
