The Cook performs a variety of cooking and other food preparation activities in accordance with HAACP guidelines and department policies and procedures.


  • Prepares food for patients, visitors and staff utilizing safe handling procedures.

Assists in serving food as needed.

  • Performs daily care and maintenance of equipment, cleaning duties and waste disposal, quality improvement activities including, but not limited to, maintaining temperature logs and performing

  • Maintains an up-to-date inventory; rotates and manages stock; fills requisitions.

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

  • Degree or training in Culinary Arts preferred.

  • 2 years of food services experience.

  • Serve Safe certification preferred.

VIEW JOBS 3/4/2021 12:00:00 AM 2021-06-02T00:00 Overview Location/Department: New Britain Men's Shelter (New Britain, CT) Status: Part-time, Non-exempt Scope & Purpose of Position: Will prepare and serve meals at the Shelter, maintain accurate records and files, order/purchase food and other items, inventory and keep track of items delivered, store items, keep kitchen and storage areas clean and stocked, train employees and volunteers, respond to concerns, attend workshops and meetings, plan and implement menus, and ensure kitchen is in compliance with various regulations. Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. * Prepare and serve meals Monday thru Sunday (except for Wednesday) as scheduled according to menu. * Prepare and maintain monthly menu. * Order all foods and related items for the shelter to ensure that adequate food is available for meals posted on the menu. * Receive all foods when delivered, check all deliveries for accuracy, and give food invoices to supervisor. * Perform necessary errands to procure sundries and foods as needed, including weekly trips to Food Share to purchase and pick up food, as scheduled. * Store all foods neatly upon delivery in the kitchen or storeroom. * Keep kitchen equipment and storage areas thoroughly cleaned and stocked in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Health Department. * Make sure food is available for breakfast before leaving in the evenings. * Utilize Harm Reduction model and Trauma Informed approach during delivery and services. * Wash and put away the items (pots, pans, utensils, slicer, etc.) used to prepare the meals, wipe down the counters, and ensure that all food is handled and stored in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Health Department. * Maintain accurate records, which include, but may not be limited to the following: daily temp checks, gift/in-kind donation forms, and daily menu changes. * Ensure that the kitchen program is in compliance with Health Department. * Attend workshops, meetings and trainings as necessary to be informed of regulations and changes as requested. Qualifications * Fluency in English language is required; Spanish speaking ability preferred. * High School Diploma/GED required. * Must be able to work holidays. * One-year cooking experience required. * ServSafe certification required. * Valid motor vehicle driver's license required. * Experience working with at-risk populations and/or person experience homelessness preferred. * Must be able to attend mandatory trainings and staff meetings. * Knowledge and belief in "Housing First" philosophy and strategies. * Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of population served. * Commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems. * Conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change. * Ability to establish and set appropriate limits with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence. * Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel, service providers, and professionals. * Capacity to maintain a role to empower clients and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals. * Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and must work well under pressure. * Committed to working with the homeless population. * Ability to maintain confidentiality an all aspects of the work environment. * Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office. * Must be empathetic and caring. * Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army.
