The Cook II performs routine (journey level) food preparation work on a designated shift & rotation in the Central Kitchen under general supervision.

May be required to work variable schedule. Work involves preparing, cooking, portioning, distributing and serving food for regular & therapeutic diets & textures. Follows prescribed menus, recipes, standards and completes necessary reports.

Responsible for sanitation of equipment and work areas. May drive the delivery vehicle. Other duties may be required.

Cook II has moderate latitude for the use of initiative and judgment. In the absence of Cook IV this position assumes oversight of the kitchen. May train/oversee others in their work.

Maintains sufficient knowledge to satisfy the requirements of the job. Handles food in accordance with federal, state and HACCP guidelines. Follows kitchen and food service safety procedures and practices.

Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. May work unusual or extended hours in the event of a disaster or operational necessity. This position is required to drive a state owned vehicle. Essential Job Functions:


Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. 1. Prepares food using proper equipment and utensils and in a manner that ensures sanitary conditions. 2. Prepares and portions food for special diets following food service procedures. 3. May be required to prepare scheduled snacks & supplements. 4. Maintains supply of snack items. 5. May be required to supervise assigned employees in all areas of food preparation, delivery, sanitation, safety and personal hygiene. 6. Prepares and participates in the distribution of food in a safe and sanitary manner according to the food service policies. 7. May be required to assist in serving food for special diets and following food service procedures. 8. Follows proper food handling in accordance to food service procedures, state, federal and HACCP guidelines. 9. May be required to receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors. 10. Follows procedures for sanitation and storage of the dishes and food service equipment. 11. Follows required sanitation procedures for cleaning kitchen, stock room, food preparation areas, and satellite areas. 12. Observes safety procedures and practices. 13. May be required to supervise/train others in food preparation. 14. Maintains work areas in a sanitary and organized manner. 15. When required, answer telephone promptly and transmit messages in a clear, concise, and positive manner. 16. Completes required training per policy. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1.Knowledge of food preparation methods, of food storage standards and sanitation regulations. 2. Skill in the operation and sanitizing of food service equipment. 3. Ability to prepare and serve food, to clean dining, serving, and food preparation area. 4. Ability to speak and read English. 5. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. 6. Ability to complete basic math used in cooking/preparation. 7. Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds. 8. Ability to bend and reach, stand/walk on hard floors for extended period of time. 9. Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions. 10. Ability to smell, taste, and see. 11. Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and residents. 12. Ability to maintain records. Requirements:

Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Selection Criteria:

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required. Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients.

In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures. Waco Center for Youth is a smoke free psychiatric residential treatment facility that serves youth, ages 13 through 17, with emotional difficulties and/or behavioral problems. Waco Center for Youth bases its treatment philosophy on the belief that both behavior change and an understanding of self and others are equally important in achieving significant long-term success in treatment.

The mission of Waco Center for Youth is "To Give Each Youth A Chance For Change" by providing comprehensive psychiatric residential treatment services to emotionally disturbed adolescents of the State of Texas.
