Job Summary:

The Community Cook reports to the Community Chef and assists in preparing meals in a safe and appetizing manner in compliance with dietary standards and food-related Community policies and procedures.

Cook Procedure:

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares food items on Community Chef's daily menu for Residents within scheduled time frame.

  • Keeps food service areas clean.

  • Monitors inventory.

  • Supervises servers in the absence of the Community Chef.

  • Maintains clean, neat, and safe work environment.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of kitchen equipment including but not limited to: ovens, slicers, mixers, steam tables, steamers, toasters, coffee pots, refrigerators, and freezers.

  • Assures that Resident diets are being followed.

  • Assures employees and Resident guest meals are accounted for on a daily basis.

  • Reports to Community Chef any loss, breakage, or waste of supplies and equipment.

  • Observes and communicates to Community Chef any problems or potential problems in the dietary department.

  • Has the ability to work with little or no supervision.

  • Has the ability to cook large quantities of food and deliver a superior product.

  • Has the ability to guide and instruct others in food preparation and food serving

  • Has the ability to maintain professional demeanor under stress

  • Has the ability to recognize needs and help others without prompting

  • Has the ability to relate well with other employees and Residents of the Community.

  • Is neat, clean, and works safely.

  • Maintains current cleaning list and highest standards for kitchen cleanliness.

  • Respects Resident rights and adheres to Community policy on Resident care.

  • Performs all other duties assigned by Community Chef.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Follows all emergency procedures.

  • Understands all safety policies and procedures.

  • Reports on-the-job injuries to the Community Chef before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs.


  • Communicates effectively with Community Chef and other staff.

  • Immediately advises Community Chef of any changes in physical and mental health of a Resident.

  • Maintains acceptable attendance record, notifying chef if expected to be late or unable to work in accordance with Community HR policies and procedures, and follows work schedule.


  • Serv Safe Certification required.

  • Has a working knowledge of rules and regulations related to health and safety in food preparation.

  • Knowledge of cooking times and temperatures essential in accordance to state guidelines.

  • Knowledge of various cuts of meat and seasonings.

  • Demonstrates ability in a wide range of food preparation and skills.

  • Experienced in dealing with seniors and their dietary needs.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to bend and reach.

  • Physically able to push and pull and lift up to 40-50 pounds if necessary.

  • Physically able to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to work in a hot/humid environment for extended amounts of time.

  • May be subject to burns from hot foods, cuts from knives, and falls on slippery floors if caution is not used when working.

  • Can determine quality and palatability of food through taste and smell.


  • May be required to work weekends and holidays as assigned.

  • May be required to work on shifts other than the one for which hired.

  • May be required to work extended hours (up to 16 hours per day).

  • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,including HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B and C viruses.

  • Could be subject to hostile and emotionally upset Residents due to mentalstatus.

  • In good physical and emotional health and free of communicable diseases.

  • Background, criminal, and drug tests may be required.

  • Could be asked to submit to random drug test during employment.

  • May have their picture taken and image used in social media or community advertising.

  • May be video recorded from devices installed by families in residents' apartments.

We offer year-round programs for children from infant through elementary-aged school age. * Primary Responsibilities:* * Maintains a keen awareness of children that have allergies and food restrictions. Offers substitute items to children who may be allergic or have other food restrictions * Ensures food service area and food is free of nuts, nut products or food items that have been processed in a facility that also processes nut products according to the policies and procedures of the Primrose School of Bells Ferry. Checks all food labels upon receipt to ensure compliance with this requirement * Follows the daily menu prepared in collaboration with or by the Director * Follows portion control standards for lunch and snacks in preparations * Is adaptable and implements changes in menus, if instructed to do so * Ensures that each meal is ready to be served when scheduled * Assists with ordering food and is able to calculate the amount needed * Maintains an orderly, clean and safe kitchen area at all times, including the proper maintenance of equipment * Attends all required staff meetings, workshops and/or school functions * Maintains overall professional personal appearance adhering to the guidelines offered in the Primrose School of Bells Ferry Employee Handbook * Assists in other capacities that Director, or designee, determines is necessary * * * Desired skills and experience: * * Must meet basic requirements of local child care and food service regulatory agencies * Ability to relate positively to young children is essential * Previous experience in quantity food preparation is preferred * Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs. in connection with the handling of children for the facilitation of programs, child safety, and potential emergency situations Each Primrose school is a privately owned and operated franchise, and the respective Franchise Owner is the employer at each school.
