Job Description

The Controls Software Engineer is responsible for developing and integrating electrical controls systems into compressor products. The successful candidate must be able to work on multiple programs cross-functionally with the Engineering, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, and Service. To be effective, you will need to be a self-driven, strong communicator that is intimately familiar with electrical and controls systems design, development, and integration into off-highway and/or industrial applications.

You Will:

  • Define overall control system architecture and requirements for new products. Size and integrate VSDs (variable speed drives), motors, and controls systems to meet application requirements.

  • Write code in assembly and in C language.

  • Design, development, and integration of electrical control systems products using knowledge of current technology to deliver innovative design solutions for best in class electrical controls.

  • Design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems to meet required specifications, focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality and sustainability. This includes new products, product line extensions, incremental updates, and maintenance releases.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Service, and Commercial teams.

You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent; Advanced Degree is a plus.

  • 6+ years of experience in electrical controls requirements, analysis, design, development, integration, and testing. Experience working for a global manufacturer in the compressor or industrial machinery industries is highly desired. (Three Phase Circuit Design, SAE J1939, UL508A, CSA, NEC, CE).

  • Experience in Linux and any RTOS is required.

  • Knowledge of rotary screw compressor systems and requirements is highly desired. Familiarity with CAGI (Compressed Air & Gas Institute) standards is a plus.

  • Solid knowledge of embedded C programing for microcontrollers is required. Highly desired: ARM Cortex-M4, STM32F4 series, Keil Vision IDE and MDK.

  • Solid knowledge of microcontroller fundamentals such as GPIO, ADC, DAC, PWM, Timers, Interrupts, Watchdog, DMA, I2C, SPI, UART/USART, etc.

  • Experience with advanced protocols such as USB, Ethernet TCP/IP, Modbus RTU via RS-232 and RS-485, Modbus TCP, CAN bus, etc. Experience using debugging tools for embedded systems and tools for static code analysis such as PC-Lint is desired.

  • Source code version control system experience is desired- Subversion/SVN/Tortoise SVN is a plus.

  • MS Visual Studio C# experience is a plus. Strong background in integrating hardware and software, using basic electrical and software tools and test equipment: schematics, oscilloscope, multimeter, soldering iron, etc.

  • Exceptional comprehension of interactions between sub-systems, and components. Extensive experience with understanding and troubleshooting compressor and/or industrial machinery operating and control problems is desired.

  • Strong working knowledge of electrical and controls applications for electric motor application.

Job Summary Provide value-added engineering and support for the development of new products as well as assisting in the maintenance and improvement of existing products. Design, test and develop product and product components following company and industry standards; develop non-routine test and evaluation procedures; assist in supervision of laboratory activities. Integration of control systems. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Design and develop product component parts, product subassemblies and product complete assemblies according to company and industry standards. Define requirements and specify needs for electronic control hardware and software. Suggest new product ideas and maintain records for potentially patentable ideas. 2. Develop test methods, instrumentation and procedures not covered by recognized Approval Agency requirements or rating codes. Administer and carry out these test programs with team's engineers and lab technicians. 3. Analyze and interpret test data and make product revisions as necessary to comply with safety and performance requirements and standards; and to perform root cause analysis to develop corrective actions. 4. Develop, maintain, and update DFMEAs and associated test plans. 5. Work with drafting personnel on creating and updating the product detailed layout, detailed prints, component specifications, and Bills of Material. Work with Technical Writer to modify or develop technical literature. 6. Work with Product Compliance, Engineering Lab, Plant Manufacturing Eng. Team, Product Managers, Commodity Managers / Supply Chain, and other Product Engineers to enable efficient execution of resolutions to issues. Provide needed technical information/assistance to other departments. 7. Use data from Customer Services, Technical Services, Homeowner Calls, Internal Defects, Warranty and Returns to develop plans for product improvements. 8. Use the Change Request (CR) process effectively and efficiently to manage change aimed toward product improvements. Organize and assign CR work within project team as assigned by Lead Controls Engineer 9. Be thoroughly knowledgeable about and test product in accordance with the Approval Agency of concern, such as Underwriters Laboratories, American Gas Association, AHRI, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and American National Standard / Canadian Standard Association. 10. Keep abreast of state and local code requirements; working with Product Compliance, area sales offices and Product Managers. 11. Assign and supervise specific tasks within project team in a manner that will allow for efficient completion of project goals. Organize and track progress of specific tasks critical to project completion. 12. Report progress to Lead Controls Engineer and/or Director of R&D and Control Systems as requested, in addition to the compilation of periodic reports. Report status of active projects, Change Requests and Engineering Change Orders. 13.
