The Role

Completes the definition of complex projects, selecting sources and monitoring results. Performs complex processes and technical support to production, marketing, sales, and/or other departments.

Completes complex projects and performs project organization, definition, planning, implementation and control. Establishes and prepares technical standards, and completes complex technology design theory and procedures. Supervises a team of Controls Engineers as they primarily work on Modernizations projects related to conveyance and sortation equipment. This can include, but is not limited to; conveyor, sortation, AS/RS, drive upgrades, PLC controlled equipment, PC controlled equipment, scanner / scan tunnel replacements, etc.

Key Responsibilities:
Successfully defines work flows, jobs, and reporting relationships to obtain optimum effectiveness. Impact of decisions on business operations can have a moderate to high level of impact.

May develop departmental budgets and business plans for functional area. May evaluate and recommend changes in methods or procedures in own area of responsibility. Identifies resource needs and may develop justification.

Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems. May recommend/ determine organizational structures and supervisory relationships for own segment of company. May be responsible for overall success of function or project.

Supervises a team of Controls Engineers with respect to staffing assignments, technical mentoring, and administrative duties related to his / her team. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, is mandatory. This includes customer interfacing capability with respect to managing scope expectations, technical reviews, general discussions, etc.

What We Are Looking For

Note that this position also requires working on project assignments as appropriate. This can include:

  • Writing / Testing / Documenting PLC code (Primarily Rockwell)

  • Holding technical review meetings

  • Maintaining / following all Dematic safety standards.

  • Marking up / Creating project drawings such as schematic's, panel assemblies, wiring diagrams.

  • Knowledge of Autocad / Maestro a plus

  • Tracking project budgets and project schedules

  • Participate in project site commissioning based on staff availability (infrequent)

Education:Typically Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree. Knowledge and Experience:Demonstrates and applies broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures for managed work group(s) and how it supports related operations.

Demonstrates understanding and application of supervisory approaches for work direction, motivation, performance management, and disciplinary action. Typically 5-8 years of successful experience in a directly related field and successful demonstration of Key Responsibilities and Knowledge as presented above. Direction of Others:Typically manages exempt engineering / technical employees, and/or lower level non-exempt employees. Key Working Relationships:Primarily intra-organizational contacts and external contacts.

Travel:

Expected travel is between 25%-40% in this position, which is typical of Modernization and Upgrade work. Note that the primary function of this position is still Managing controls engineers that report to the Manager.

Ideally, the manager travel is more towards the 25% end of the spectrum to support his / her team or when the staff is already assigned to other projects and the manager is filling in. The traveling is also typically over weekends and on Holidays.
