The role of the Controls Engineer is to review and create electrical designs, drawings and specifications involving existing and new technology for food processing equipment. Use AutoCAD and other software to provide high quality equipment designs and drawings at the lowest possible cost.Uses Visual Basic, C++, PLC and OIT programs to write application code.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creates and reviews, designs, drawings, BOMs, specifications, etc. and ensures that projects meet specifications, standards and performance requirements within area of expertise.

  • Uses Visual Basic, C++, PLC and OIT programs to write application code.

  • Write PLC programs to control industrial food processing equipment

  • Creating functional OIT screens for operator interaction

  • Writes department process, procedures and policies as required.

  • Actively progressing industry knowledge base.

  • Uses independent judgment, consistently and clearly demonstrates creativity and innovation in finding solutions and alternatives.

  • Identifies root cause of problems. Develops alternative solutions and communicates associated benefits and risks.

  • Broadly recognized as a technical leader and offers significant contributions to a variety of problems and/or projects.

  • Interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures.

  • Uses advanced product line knowledge to help Application Engineering and Customer Service create complex quotes for machines and parts.

  • Assist with the development of new professionals.

  • Interfaces with technical professionals outside of the local organization.

  • Solicits understanding & support of fellow engineers and other departments for major projects & uses available technical resources. Fosters teamwork & collaboration, builds trust.

  • Has strong relationship with major customers to influence purchase decisions made by customer upper management. Viewed by sales department as key in convincing customer decision-makers of the value of product offerings.

  • Called upon consistently for external technical advice by customers and JBT service technicians.

  • Works with sales, service, methods, and production departments to effectively execute orders and solve problems in the field.

EDUCTION AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills and Experience:

  • Mandatory: BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

  • At least (8) years relevant experience in industrial machine controls.

  • Ability to understand PC based control systems with Microsoft O/S

  • Ability to program in Visual Basic and C++

  • Ability to read machine control electrical schematics

  • Ability to program PLC's & GUI systems

  • Ability to configure industrial machine controls, including AC/DC drives

  • Advanced knowledge of competing & alternative technologies.

  • Ability to communicate within a team environment.

  • Ability to anticipate potential problems and take preventative actions.

  • Ability to use ERP based business system such as JDE or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of modern scheduling tools.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently create functional & cost effective designs/processes that meet complex specification requirements.

  • Broad understanding of the divisions businesses and the internal and external economic factors affecting the businesses. Broad understanding of internal economic factors affecting assignment areas (costs, margins, profit impact of decisions).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • May be required to travel to various JBT and/or customers' sites inside and outside of the U.S

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Has or can obtain a valid Passport.

  • Behavioral based safety program.

  • Training courses as outlined in the individuals development agreement.

RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively reviews costs, margins, and engineering hours spent on projects and compares actual dollars and time spent to estimated.

  • Interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures.

  • Receives objectives and guidelines for projects.

  • Participates in the planning and scheduling process for projects in which involved.

  • Works with management to solve problems and update designs.

  • Uses software tools to provide industry standard programs for custom equipment at the lowest possible cost.

  • Manages all technical aspects of custom equipment orders.

  • Effectively interacts with all functional areas of the business.

  • Discusses conceptual ideas and direction of work with peers in order to minimize mistakes.

  • Meticulous checking of work is required to minimize mistakes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Approximately 60% of all work is performed in an office setting, 15% on the shop floor and 25% traveling to various sites. Extended periods of time will be at a computer terminal. Possible exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in assembly areas and field service applications.

COMPENSATION RANGE:: $97,750 - $132,250

Compensation is determined on experience and skill.
