Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Automation and Controls is currently seeking a Controls Engineer to join our team in the Portsmouth, VA office. The Engineer will support all electrical design functions related to Water-Wastewater, Automotive and Bridge Controls. Demonstrated trouble shooting skills are absolutely necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Create electrical schematics from customer specifications and update schematics per assembly red-lines

  • Specify and size electrical parts based on calculations, customer specifications, and engineering principals

  • Create accurate BOMs corresponding to electrical schematics

  • Interpret customer specifications and Scope of Work documentation to design a system that meets all customer requirements

  • Analyze controls P&ID's

  • Program and Troubleshoot / debug electrical machine controls component selection

  • Hardware design such as panel layout or industrial controls required using AutoCAD

  • Assist electrical technicians in the construction of electrical equipment

  • Follow all company processes, check lists, and support the development of standardized design platforms

Skills / Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Engineering or 10 years equivalent experience in Plants or Pump Stations

  • 5 -10 years of PLC and HMI programming experience using Siemens, Rockwell, GE and/or Emerson Micro PLC's

  • Electrical design of PC data acquisition system

  • Electrical Controls and PLC Logic for Moto/ Pump systems in Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants

  • Variable Frequency Drive programming and functionality

  • Specifying and sizing electrical parts based on calculations, customer specifications, and engineering principals

  • AC and DC power and control

  • Designing and debugging Data Acquisition systems )SCADA)

  • Selection and implementation of PC's and PLC's for controlling and recording data for industrial test machines

  • Power-up, Debug, and Calibration of Aerospace or Automotive Test Systems

  • Knowledge of US and International electrical codes (NEC and IEC)

  • Electrical journeyman license or equivalent experience is a plus

  • Travel up to 50%

  • Authorization to work lawfully in the US without sponsorship from Wood is required

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to climb a 2 story ladder

  • Can walk a mile in 20 minutes

  • Be able to cover, on foot, a reasonable distance on a job site

  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs without difficulty

  • All of the above items to be accomplished while carrying a laptop computer

Under limited supervision performs highly skilled work associated with the installation, programming, maintenance and repair of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment, Human Machine Interface (HMI) equipment, Operator Input Terminal (OIT), electronic process control instrumentation, and electronic equipment used in the production, treatment, storage, and distribution of water and wastewater. Assures proper maintenance of equipment and office records. Creates and maintains user interface screens and dashboards. Maintains databases. Performs computer, server, and network configuration, installation, and support. Performs other duties as needed. Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to: * Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs the more complex process control computers; plant and distribution telemetry equipment; electronic/electrical control circuits; and other complex instrumentation activities utilized in the water treatment, distribution, and wastewater collection process. Installs, programs, & maintains SCADA, HMI, OIT, OPC, and performs emergency repairs. * Maintains network infrastructure, including but not limited to: routing, switching, encryption, wireless, network management, servers, network security, and physical transport layers (i.e. copper and fiber). * Manages and coordinates projects by prioritizing projects, monitoring progress, resolving issues, analyzing situations and implementing solutions. * Determines client's requirements by attending meetings, learning the client's current processes, documenting the requirements, writing system and program specifications and obtaining client approvals. * Provides support to clients by conducting detailed analysis of process flows, producing feasibility and cost analysis, understanding multiple client's interactions, writing requests for proposals, training clients, developing and administering vendor contracts and preparing reports and presentations. * Develops new computer systems by designing, implementing, testing and debugging systems, assisting with network research and problem solving, maintaining and documenting computer programs using various computer languages, communicating with users before, during and after job completion, developing project definitions and system requirements, providing solutions to or enhancing the current system, analyzing, advising and assisting users in obtaining maximum effectiveness for their specific applications and performing system analysis on developed systems. * Supports the computerized integrated system by maintaining and monitoring current equipment, troubleshooting the failure equipment for hardware and software, designing, developing and testing new systems, evaluating the software and operating systems, meeting other departments regarding various data downloads, reporting requirements and system interfaces, reviewing, evaluating and making recommendations regarding software and providing programming, system and technical guidance. * Provides documentation by preparing detailed systems documentation for programs and procedures, documenting new and modified programs and preparing for new jobs, programs and schedules to be implemented into the production environment. Education/Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Three years experience as a programmer analyst. The preferred candidate will possess the following: * Extensive experience installing and programming PLCs for SCADA, OIT, OPC, and HMI applications – Schneider Electric, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and/or GE preferred. * Experience creating and maintaining operator interfaces – Cimplicity required. * Extensive experience with one or more of: Concept, Unity, RS Logix, or Siemens Simatic. * Experience with Visual Basic Scripting desired. Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot motor controllers. * Experience in creating, modifying, and managing databases – Historian & Microsoft SQL Server required. * Experience performing data retrieval and analysis using SQL & Excel. * Experience with NFPA 70 (NEC).
