Description
Reporting to the Executive Vice-President/Chief Financial Officer (EVP/CFO), the Controller will be responsible for managing the daily accounting activities of a not-for profit agency with an $17M operating budget and 29 government contracts. The Controller supervises an experienced team of 3 staff members including a Senior Accounting Manager, Senior Accounting Clerk and Accounting Clerk. The Controller has functional responsibility over accounting which includes general ledger, monthly close, payroll processing, account reconciliations and accruals, maintenance and integrity of accounting data and records, internal control practices and procedures, grant management including compliance, preparation of financial statements, compliance with GAAP and annual audits. The Controller will work closely with other functional teams to ensure they are getting the information they need and understand their role in fulfilling internal controls and compliance. WINGS is a high growth organization, which will provide the Controller with opportunities to develop policies, procedures and processes to handle such growth. This position is also part of the succession plan for the role of CFO.
Objective: To ensure timely, accurate and compliant financial accounting and reporting for WINGS while maintaining an effective and efficient internal control structure. Also to provide support to various teams across WINGS on budget, financial reporting and grant compliance as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting functions including compliance with GAAP, accuracy in reporting, timeliness of activities, expense allocation and general ledger monitoring and reconciliation.
Oversee and support the accounting team.
Prepare monthly financial statement packet for management, Board Committees and Board of Directors as required.
Assist EVP/CFO with annual budgets, forecasts, and projections.
Oversee the preparation and submission of monthly/quarterly vouchers and reporting for government grants along with analysis of spending progress to ensure maximization of grant awards.
Assist with management and coordination of the activities of external auditors.
Assist in evaluation, recommendation, documentation, implementation, and monitoring of the system of accounting policies and internal controls.
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing.
Provide support to Development and Government Grant activities with financial reports and budget assistance.
Evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of accounting processes and use of technology to maximize efficiency in workflows and reporting.
Requirements
Certified Public Accountant designation required; current license preferred.
7 years direct experience with non-profit accounting, including government grant reporting and compliance, required.
5 years management experience required.
Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge/NXT preferred.
