As a Controller with Scout Clean Energy, you will oversee the organization’s accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic alignment with business goals. You will manage accounting functions including financial reporting, systems implementations, and internal controls, while driving process improvements and operational efficiency. You will provide leadership on the accounting team, collaborate with senior executives, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and company policy. You will additionally drive solutions and implement financial systems, support audits, and delivery actionable insights to support the department and organizational growth and stability.    

The Controller reports directly to Scout’s Vice President of Corporate Finance. 

The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with a growth mindset, stepping in to support others on the team with new responsibilities as they emerge and leading by example. To start, the Controller will have the following responsibilities:  

  • Lead the preparation, review, and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards (GAAP or IFRS). 
  • Oversee and optimize the financial reporting processes to ensure timely delivery of critical information to senior leadership and stakeholders. 
  • Manage the accounting operations of the company, including accounting systems, compliance, and the implementation of best practices. 
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory standards. 
  • Analyze and document the proper technical accounting treatment for unique or complex transactions, ensuring adherence to relevant accounting standards. 
  • Drive the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger while managing and optimizing the month-end and year-end close processes. 
  • Update the Hypothetical Liquidation at Book Value (HLBV) model quarterly and build new models to support ongoing financial reporting and strategic analysis. 
  • Lead and coordinate external audits, acting as the primary point of contact with auditors and ensuring successful and efficient audit outcomes. 
  • Provide strategic leadership to a mid-sized team of accountants, fostering professional growth, mentorship, and a high-performance culture. 
  • Grow the accounting team as necessary by recruiting, selecting, onboarding, and training new employees to support company growth. 
  • Develop and deliver training programs for new and existing team members to improve accounting practices, systems proficiency, and compliance awareness. 
  • Partner with executive leadership to execute and manage ad-hoc financial projects, analyses, and cross-departmental initiatives. 
  • Take ownership of accounting systems implementations and upgrades, driving process improvements and ensuring seamless integration across functions. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline financial processes, improve efficiency, and maintain alignment with organizational objectives.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.  
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting and corporate finance.  
  • Expertise in GAAP, IFRS, and other accounting standards. 
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory best practices.  
  • Proficiency in ERP systems. Experience in Oracle is a plus.  
  • Demonstrated success in audit management both internal and external.  
  • CPA is not required but preferred.

Timeline and Location 

The target start date for this role is by March 2025, pending successful reference and background checks.  

This role will be based in our Boulder, CO office and will work in the office at least three days per week on our hybrid schedule.

Benefits

Target base salary: $160,000 - $185,000. Negotiable for the right candidate. 

Attractive annual bonus potential and eligibility for a deferred bonus program.
