Today's Special Metals is a world leader in the invention, production and supply of the high-nickel, high-performance alloys used for the difficult jobs in engineering. Special Metals offers the largest range of nickel alloys and product forms, as well cobalt alloys, to more than ten worldwide markets. We produce nickel alloys in all standard mill forms, from large ingots and billets to plate, sheet, strip, tubing, bar and wire, the latter of which includes core and filler wires for welding products. The company has manufacturing and research facilities in the USA and Europe, sales offices in North America, Europe and Asia, and a distribution network including most of the industrialized countries of the world.

The Position

The Controller will be responsible for the overall financial management and controls for our New Hartford, NY (and Dunkirk, NY) operation, a $300M+ operation and one of PCC's flagship sites. This business leader will partner with the Leadership Team to maximize EBIT and optimize Operating Working Capital requirements by achieving maximum return on financial assets and growing revenue through internal growth and additional market penetration opportunities. The Controller will lead a team of 7 people with 2 direct reports.


  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual P&L consolidations and financial reporting consistent with GAAP and PCC Policy.

  • Manage all contract review through the ECON system, ensuring compliance to PCC policies.

  • Manage Project Management cost, including capital spending and tracking the reporting of project spending.

  • Safeguard the plant's fixed assets physically and via our tracking system.

  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of financial analyses for significant transactions, and major capital expenditure proposals; present leadership team with a clear and concise review of current and projected operating results.

  • Assess and upgrade finance organization as needed to meet the changing needs of the business. Exercise strong leadership skills including communications and teamwork between finance, operating groups, division and corporate staff.

  • Provide leadership to strengthen internal control environment and maintain SOX section 404 compliance.

  • Partner with the General Manager and other members of the leadership team; provide advice and counsel on a wide range of issues facing the business.

  • Facilitate timely development of financial plans, including sales, profits, capital spending, standard cost, cash flow and balance sheets. Proactively assess key assumptions underlying operating plans; identify major risks and opportunities and compare to management expectations.

  • Manage assets, revenue chain, credit & collections, and cash. Identify and pursue opportunities for reducing working capital.

  • Support sales through and review of quotes consistent with corporate profit objectives.

  • Refines and maintains the integrity of the plant's standard cost system.

  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to ensure efficient reviews of financial data and controls.


  • Minimum 10 years financial management experience in progressively responsible positions within multi-unit/cultural manufacturing organizations; a demonstrated track record of accountability and achievement.

  • Strong skills and knowledge of accounting theory and application of financial principles (GAAP) and experience operating within a SOX compliant environment.

  • Demonstrated track record of financial control and analysis within a complex manufacturing environment.

  • Working knowledge of ERP; ability to recommend changes and upgrades to meet the needs of the business.

  • Strong managerial presence that reflects a participative, pro-active, hands-on operating style requiring a high energy level and tolerance to tight deadlines.

  • Excellent communication, people development, planning and organization skills. B.S. degree required. MBA/CPA preferred.

Housekeeping and Maintenance of Hospital: * Make certain entire hospital both inside and outside, including treatment, surgery, kennels, runs, parking lot and entry is kept very clean throughout the day (so that a client could enter the treatment room and/or hospital ward and see their pet without any notice). This includes your own clothing and appearance. * Advise Medical Director or Technical Supervisor of any conditions that are unsafe, including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules. Examinations: * Ability to perform a cursory examination of an animal. * Ability to use a stethoscope and otoscope. * Ability to recognize fleas, ticks and other external parasites. * Ability to recognize other potential health care issues, i.e., dental, signs and behavior patterns that suggest an animal may be in pain, and necessity of veterinarian's examination. * Clearly communicate your findings to doctor. Refuse to make a diagnosis. Records * Keep records up to date. This includes client records with charges, medical history, vaccination status, medications administered, laboratory reports, etc. * Maintain all log books (radiology, surgery, anesthesia, laboratory and controlled substance logs, etc.). * Handwriting must be neat and legible. Anesthesia * Understand how to maintain and use the hospital's inhalation anesthetic machines. * Administer certain anesthetics under direct doctor supervision. * Monitor anesthesia under direct doctor supervision. * Familiarity with procedures and antidotes for an anesthesia emergency. Surgery: * Understand how to prep animals for aseptic surgery. * Understand principles of aseptics in the surgery room and participate in maintaining sterile conditions. * Know the names and general uses of surgical instruments and equipment. * Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and packs. * Be willing and able to assist the doctor with certain surgical procedures. Radiology: * Position animals properly for radiography. * Know how to properly use positioning devices so that patients may be radiographed without the requirement of assistants holding animals in place whenever possible. * Develop radiographs. * Maintain and care for all radiology equipment. * Practice all safety regulations in regard to radiology. Dentistry: * Understand how to set up and use the hospital's dental prophylactics unit. * Perform routine dental prophylactics procedures as directed by a staff veterinarian. * Know general uses of the hospital's instrumentation for endodontic, exodontic procedures, etc. * Ability to take dental radiographs if necessary. Laboratory: * Draw blood samples. * Collect stool and urine samples. * Prepare lab request forms. * Perform certain laboratory tests: * Stool exams (flotation tests and Giardia fecal antigen tests) * Urinalysis * Heartworm test * Skin scrapings * FELV tests Pharmacy: * Create prescription labels, fill prescriptions and dispense medications as directed by a doctor. * Control inventory and assist in ordering medications and supplies. * Maintain proper storage and safekeeping of drugs as directed by a doctor.
