Why this Role?
Next Street, a certified B Corporation committed to empowering small businesses and advancing racial equity, is seeking an experienced and purpose-driven Controller to manage our financial operations. As a key member of our 70-person team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our organization, enabling us to maximize our positive impact.
Reporting to one of the co-CEOs and collaborating closely with our People + Culture and Executive Leadership teams, you will oversee accounting operations, drive financial strategy, and implement processes and controls that reflect our values of transparency, accountability and operational excellence. This is an exciting opportunity to leverage your financial expertise to help build a more just and equitable economy.
Your work will consist of…
Accounting Operations & Compliance
Oversee core accounting functions including AP, AR, GL, payroll, month-end close and year-end reporting
Manage cash/working capital on a day-to-day basis
Ensure compliance with GAAP, B Corp standards, regulatory requirements and internal policies
Manage annual audit process and tax filings in partnership with external accounting firm
Implement and strengthen internal financial controls to protect company assets and integrity
Supervises key reconciliation processes
Ensure proper reconciliation of balance sheet to external capital raise and cap tables
Financial Management & Strategy
Manages balance sheet and corporate finance in alignment with corporate goals and company operating agreements
Serve as a strategic thought partner to the executive team on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow management and risk mitigation
Develop and monitor annual and project-based budgets, including actual to budget variance analysis, in alignment with our B Corp values and strategic priorities
Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports to drive sound decision-making
Work with FP&A partner to analyze financial data to identify trends, variances and opportunities for efficiencies and impact
Process Improvement & Automation
Partner with Head of Operations to streamline financial processes and drive operational efficiencies as we scale our impact
Optimize use of accounting software (QuickBooks) and integrate financial data flows with other key systems (CRM, expense management, etc.)
Ensure proper and ongoing financial updates are made to equity cap tables and equity ownership software (e.g. Carta)
Document and improve financial policies, procedures and workflows
Team Collaboration & Leadership
Oversees and manages accounting personnel (internal and external, as appropriate)
Work collaboratively with external partners (e.g. legal counsel, outsourced finance partners, lending institutions, investors, etc.) that work on, or support, various finance and accounting goals
Develop annual objectives and key results (OKRs) for finance and accounting initiatives
Translate complex financial concepts to non-finance colleagues to build organization-wide financial acumen and accountability
Partner with People + Culture team on compensation planning, benefit administration and HR compliance
Embody and promote our B Corp values of anti-racism, authenticity, action-orientation, collaboration and entrepreneurship
Why you?
Passion for B Corp values and leveraging finance as a tool for social impact
8-10+ years of progressively responsible accounting & financial management experience, ideally in mission-driven organizations; CPA required
Deep knowledge of GAAP, financial planning & analysis, budgeting, risk management and accounting best practices
Advanced QuickBooks proficiency and experience with financial process automation
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
Excellent communicator able to build trust and collaborate effectively with diverse teams
Self-starter with strong project management skills and ability to drive results in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

Next Street believes in an equitable and transparent compensation approach. The starting salary for this role is $167,400 - $181,100 regardless of location and commensurate with experience. You will be eligible to participate annually in Next Street's discretionary incentive program. For new hires, Next Street targets the start of the salary band, although considerations could be made based on job knowledge, skills, and experience. As part of our Antiracism commitment, Next Street uses a pay scale approach and transparent methodology to advance staff within a compensation band based on performance.
