Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Accurate and timely preparation of financial statements consistent with GAAP and insurance agency accounting standards.

  • Analyze budget variances and recommend corrective actions as needed.

  • Efficiently and accurately account for commissions earned from carriers as well as commissions due to account executives, brokers and other parties per M3 agreements.

  • Manage and coordinate an efficient internal and external audit process.

  • Develop internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for all accounting and financial reporting activities.

  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies, including tax policies, directives, and current accounting standards. Ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.

Leadership, Development and Management

  • Provide leadership, employee development support and supervision to Finance Department team. Includes continuous modeling and communication of M3 Vision, Mission, Strategies, Values and Goals.

  • Coordinate & monitor workflow and work load of staff to provide the highest level of customer service as well as efficient operations.

  • Interview, hire, train, evaluate, discipline and terminate employees.

  • Analyze and manage expenditures of the department to conform to budget.

  • Participate in appropriate agency committees and meetings.

Decision Support and Analysis

  • Provide decision support services to M3 leadership team, including financial reports and analysis, aid in projects, profitability improvement, business initiatives or other decision support.

Advanced knowledge of Excel. * ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance, the Controller assists with oversight of the YMCAs accounting practices, maintenance of fiscal records, preparation of financial reports, 990 tax returns and external audit; and ensures compliance with applicable laws, GAAP and policies and procedures in accordance with and alignment to the YMCA mission, strategic plan, goals and all policies and procedures of the YMCA of Dane County, Inc. and the YUSA Best Practices. POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Staff Accountant, Accounting Specialist, Billing Specialist, Lead Childcare Administrative Specialist. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Ensures accuracy and GAAP compliance of financial reports, monitors general ledger transactions and prepares month end recurring and reclassifying journal entries, work papers and balance sheet reconciliations. * Coordinates the preparation for the external audit, regulatory reporting, and the preparation of financial reports. * Coordinates and reviews receivable and payable processes ensuring credit risk is mitigated and collections are timely. * Implements sound business practices and procedures and makes recommendations for improvement ensuring that legal and audit requirements are met and that best practices and maximum efficiency are obtained. * Recruits, hires, trains, manages, develops, coaches, schedules and directs employees and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates employee and volunteer performance. Develops strategies to motivate employees and achieve goals. * Management of appropriate systems and internal controls to adequately safeguard the YMCAs financial resources and to provide a solid basis for accurately reporting financial data. * Provides assistance and analysis to directors and executives for variance reports on financial statements, forecasts and budgets. * Provides oversight and assistance with fiscal management of grant and donor financial reporting. Collects and reviews donor and grant data; assists in the preparation of grant performance metrics and financial reports for state, city, and federal agencies. Ensures compliance with grant requirements and financial reporting including unrestricted, restricted and deferred revenues and accrued expenses. * Provides guidance to operating staff throughout the annual budget process. Works closely with operations staff on issues that affect financial outcome. * Provides support to the VP of Finance for banking, audit, insurance and legal services. Provides support to the VP of Finance for Finance & Audit Board Committee activities. * Responsible for recording, reconciling, paying out and filing all unclaimed property with the state of Wisconsin. * Assists in ensuring the Finance Department operates within budget and follows budgeting policies and procedures. * Builds positive relationships with and among staff, volunteers and/or members and creates a supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new staff, volunteers and/or members and connects members/volunteers/staff to the YMCAs cause. * Follows all policies and procedures as set forth in the YMCA of Dane County Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct. * Performs other duties as requested. QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelors degree in Accounting and at least five years related experience required. CPA preferred. * Experience with grants and donor administration and compliance with requirements. * Requires working knowledge of finance, budgeting, cost control principles and GAAP accounting. * Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required. * Advanced Micorsoft Excel skills required. * Knowledge of accounting reporting systems required. * Ability to analyze financial data, provide variance explanations and prepare accurate financial reports and projections. * Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting required. * The ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials while meeting tight deadlines. * Must demonstrate initiative, strong leadership skills, and the ability to provide guidance to staff with a variety of educational and experiential backgrounds. * Must possess reliable transportation for travel when required. * Requires the ability to organize, prioritize and manage tasks without direct supervision.
