The Controller will provide accounting expertise while overseeing the performance of a small accounting staff.

This individual should have strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, the capability and willingness to work with a variety of people at all levels, and the ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work closely with multiple entities and projects.


  • Responsible for the day to day accounting for the organization and monthly financial close and reporting for multiple entities
  • Maintenance of a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Reconciliation of G/L accounts.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Review existing accounting functions and procedures and recommend improvements
  • Develop performance measures that support the company's strategic direction
  • Ensure payable, receivable, and payroll functions are performed properly
  • Ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Work closely with external parties
  • Lead process improvements and integration of tax and statutory reporting functions to achieve optimal efficiency, effective controls quality, maintaining ongoing development, implementation and documentation with all applicable statutory reporting and tax procedures, ensuring that Companys exposure is limited in the event of an audit
  • Work closely with external tax team and Maintain standardized tax return reporting packages across multiple LLC and work closely with external tax professionals to ensure ongoing compliance
  • Ensuring proper accounting of financial relationship between commonly-owned companies is also a priority.
  • Develops and maintains accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements
  • Budget and cash flow projections
  • Monthly reporting and analysis
  • Prepare quarterly reports for external lenders
  • Prepare financial statements
  • Additional duties may be assigned


  • Bachelors in Accounting or Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License preferred
  • 8+ years experience
  • Industry experience in General Construction or Subcontracting preferred
  • Percentage Complete accounting and Work in Progress reports (WIP)
  • Highly proficient in accounting software applications, including
  • Sage 300, Timberline or other ERP
  • Detail oriented / hands-on involvement in day to day accounting
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

MTEQ is seeking an Accountant I with extensive knowledge and strong communication skills to join our team of well qualified, diverse individuals at our Lorton, VA Office. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: * Process, obtain approvals, code and input all A/P invoices * Match invoices with purchase order receipts at entry point * Review employee expense reports for accurate and complete documentation and route for approvals * Process employee expense reports once they have been approved * Track, research and resolve outstanding invoice and payment issues * Verify the accuracy of invoices and other accounting documents relating to accounts payable * Obtain W-9s and validate vendor information * Prepare 1099 tax forms for appropriate vendors * Manage the reconciliation, review, and coding of company credit card statements * Prepare and maintain files as needed and ensure that filing is current * Manage the vendor payment process (both checks and EFT/ACH transactions) to include weekly check runs and employee expense payments * Respond to vendor inquiries and internal stakeholders in a timely manner and provide assistance with resolving payment issues * Analyze vendor accounts as necessary * Maintain and update fixed asset register * Prepare and maintain various month-end account reconciliations, to include prepaids, accrued expenses and accounts payable at a minimum * Provide AP related backup for customer billings to AR personnel * Assist with audits and special projects as necessary * Data entry is required * Ensure that program managers have all relevant financial information for programs * Assist with budget to actual variance analysis * Assist with preparation of divisional profit report and communication of results to relevant parties * Assist Controller with analysis and special projects as needed REQUIREMENTS: * Experience with Jamis or Deltek cost accounting systems and Cognos Impromptu reporting software highly desired * 1-5 Years experience in a similar role * Bachelors degree required, Business or Accounting majors preferred. * Strong attention to detail * Excellent organizational/management/communication skills * Intermediate to Expert Excel skills * Must be able to troubleshoot and problem solve * Must be able to work in high volume and fast paced work environment * Must demonstrate professionalism and a positive work ethic PRIMARY LOCATION: Lorton, VA SCHEDULE: Full time ACCESSIBILITY/ACCOMMODATION: If because of a medical condition or disability, you need a reasonable accommodation for any part of the employment process please send an e-mail to or call (540) 658-2720 Opt 4 and let us know the nature of your request and your contact information.
