Boston Metal is commercializing cutting edge extractive metallurgy technology that will revolutionize primary metals production by improving metal quality while decreasing cost and lowering environmental impact. This growing, fast-paced startup company is looking for a Controller who will be responsible for assisting the VP of Finance with the management of the financial functions of Boston Metal. This new position will report to the VP of Finance but will be responsible for working across all areas of the organization.
Responsibilities:
Manage the accounting operations including review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, revenue recognition and accounts receivable, consolidation of international affiliates (include adjustments from IFRS to USGAAP and different currencies).
Manage the month-end close process, reviewing and maintaining reconciliation schedules monthly
Conduct and/or coordinate audits of company accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and statutes
Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards and practices
Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements including external reporting as required
Prepare and file annual tax returns or prepare financial information so that outside accountants can complete tax returns
Oversee all aspects of tax compliance and reporting, including but not limited to income tax, sales tax, property tax, tax credits and payroll tax
Support the accounting of grants and other governmental support, ensuring proper recording and reporting in accordance with regulatory requirements
Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established company policies and procedures
Assist with budgeting and forecasting
Work with finance team and other operating managers to improve efficiency and accuracy of current processes
Provide analysis as required to drive improved decision making
Develop and maintain a framework for accruing expenses related to ongoing projects for easy track and comparison with budget
Assist with accounting functions of subsidiary and any other related consolidations
Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of financial information
Assist the VP of Finance in setting priorities within accounting team
Conduct the year-end external audit and preparation of audited financial statements, including the preparation of F-pages, footnotes and disclosures according to PCAOB standards
Recommend and support new systems to increase efficiency and accuracy
Develop strong working relationships with other Boston Metal managers and departments
Support with cost control, verification of instruments to control expenses and improve operational efficiency
Coach and mentor other staff members. Supervise employees performing financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, payroll, and budgeting duties.
Qualifications:
10 years of General Accounting experience, to include a minimum of 5 years as a Controller. Required CPA with preference for some public accounting experience
Bachelors degree in Business/Accounting with an advanced degree or professional accounting designation preferred
Experience working in or with a startup company with knowledge of all areas of accounting including equity
Professional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are vital to this role
Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms
Financial analysis and budgeting experience
Knowledge of USGAAP and IFRS, accounting practices and applications
Advanced knowledge of MS Office, PowerPoint, and Excel
Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions to move work forward
Experience using NetSuite and QuickBooks, and knowledge of other ERPs
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong attention to detail
Ability to lead financial staff
