Our client in the real estate business is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join their team.
Role Summary: Reporting directly to the Owner, the Controller will play a pivotal role in overseeing the financial operations of the entire company. Serving as a strategic partner to the leadership team, the Controller will be responsible for managing the Accounting department and positioning themselves to eventually assume the CFO role. This is an excellent opportunity for a driven financial professional to gain extensive exposure to the homebuilding industry and take on increasing responsibilities over time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of the company's financial operations, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
- Manage and mentor the experienced Accounting Manager and staff, fostering a high-performing team
- Liaise with the company's banks to negotiate loan terms and maintain strong relationships
- Assist with land acquisition, equity/debt structuring, and other real estate finance activities
- Manage the financial affairs and tax planning for the Ryder family members
- Interact with the company's CPA firm and other external financial partners
- Recommend and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and operational efficiency
- Provide financial analysis, strategic guidance, and decision support to the Owner and leadership team
- Stay current on accounting regulations, tax laws, and industry best practices
- Participate in high-level planning meetings and collaborate cross-functionally with the construction and sales teams
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred
- Minimum 7-10 years of progressive experience in a Controller or senior accounting role, preferably in the homebuilding or construction industry
- Demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Strong understanding of real estate finance, including land acquisition, equity/debt structuring, and bank relationships
- Experience managing and developing accounting teams, including performance management
- Proficient in the use of Sage/Timberline or similar construction accounting software
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Hands-on mindset and willingness to assist with a variety of operational tasks as needed
- Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, changing environment
