Job Summary:

Monitors the Energy Management System (EMS) Real-Time computer systems, Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) Real-Time computer systems, data networks, security systems and communication infrastructure. Performs testing, analysis, and corrective action on Real-Time EMS/ADMS related equipment to ensure downtime is minimized for all EMS/ADMS functions. Provides first response support for all EMS/ADMS related problems. Initiates and coordinates user support, callout, field service activities, and task assignment of support resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Assess Real-Time equipment failures in Real-Time and coordinate repairs/replacement with appropriate vendors and users.

  • Assess stability conditions of the Real-Time EMS/ADMS computer systems, functions, Remote Terminal Units (RTU), Intelligent Grid (IG) Devises, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) and determine the root cause of problems, actuate corrective action unilaterally, if appropriate, or activate additional resources, as necessary.

  • Manage and monitor Control Systems computer networks and physical access systems.

  • Perform computer system audits and administer security policies

  • Install new equipment and systems to support Transmission and Distribution Control Operations.

  • Serve as the first line of user support for all of the equipment essential to all EMS/ADMS user functions (e.g., Consoles, Routers, Firewalls, Monitors, Application Interfaces, Radio & Telephone system, and Voice recorders.)

  • Coordinate work activities with other user and /or support organizations related to EMS/ADMS interfaces (e.g., Information Systems, Substation Engineering, Substation Operations and Telecommunications, etc.).

  • Perform Real-Time System configuration functions such as system restart/reset (e.g., system performance monitoring, problem resolution/documentation, etc.)

  • Perform/execute first level administration tasks for EMS/ADMS computers and related infrastructure systems.

  • Observe all company safety procedures when performing installation, repair, maintenance, and testing responsibilities.

  • Accept responsibility for participating in long term projects and report activities and results to senior and supervisory personnel.

Education:

Bachelor's degree required

  • Prefer degree in Computer, Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology

Experience:

No previous work experience required.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to hear oral communication either in person or on equipment such as telephone or mobile phone.

  • Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop, for extended periods

  • Able to operate office machines including telephone, photocopier, fax, calculator, mobile phone, etc.

  • Able to focus on monitor screens for extended period.

  • Able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or reach repeatedly.

  • Able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.

  • Able to lift equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. and set in place (ex. Monitors, printers, etc.)

  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Working Conditions:

  • Able to work a rotating schedule (combination of 8, 10 and 12-hour shifts) including nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Able to work after hours and weekends.

  • Able to work On-Call duty to support 24-hour operations

  • Able to work near energized equipment.

  • Able to work at remote locations such as service centers or other CenterPoint Energy facilities

  • Able to support the Emergency Operating Plan.

  • Able to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether open office, cubicle or private office.

  • Able to travel occasionally, possibly overnight.

Qualifications/Criteria: * Bachelor degree or Associates degree and 2+ years in an engineering design environment or equivalent experience * Ten years or more experience in an Industrial Controls Engineering environment * Proficient in Honeywell or Delta V portfolio of software and hardware * Ability to troubleshoot issues and perform proactive maintenance * Understanding Unix or Linux OS is a plus Technical Responsibilities: * Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in process controls including a detailed understanding of the process, ability to optimize the parameters and optimize the measurable outcomes while minimizing risks of hazards. * Demonstrates proficient knowledge of P&IDs and instrumentation/control equipment in an industrial environment. * Demonstrates, optimizes and instructs an expert knowledge of the control methods, analog and discrete and the critical components to developing sustainable control algorithms. * Proficient experience in implementing new and maintaining legacy control methodology in DCS, PLC or HMI platforms with a high level of understanding of various programming languages. Able to easily adapt to a new platform with development support. * Ability to optimize design and implement knowledge of control system architecture including hardware, software, instrumentation and networking equipment. * Proficient understanding of analog advanced control and batch control and ability to lead implementation * Demonstrates leadership in loop checking, startup, troubleshooting and commissioning support in an industrial environment. * Proficient ability to understand control philosophy and write functional requirement specifications based on expected functionality including description of control loops, interlocks and alarms. * Demonstrates a high level of knowledge of 120 VAC control circuits inside electric motor starters and able to read motor schematics and electrical one line diagrams. * Demonstrates a high level of knowledge of Cause and Effect Charts and Functional Specifications used to develop software for process automation control system logic (as needed for position & industry).
