POSITION TITLE: Control System Network Engineer

JOB CODE NUMBER: 151145

JOB FAMILY: Information Technology

GRADE: 14

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director Engineering & Technology

DEPARTMENT: IT Department

As a Control System Network Engineer, you will play a vital role in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure and efficient network infrastructures for control systems in industrial environments. You will collaborate closely with automation engineers, control system integrators, and IT professionals to ensure seamless integration of network technologies with industrial control systems (ICS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other operational technologies. This role requires a deep understanding of networking protocols, cybersecurity principles, and control system architectures.

  • Network Infrastructure Design: Design and develop robust, scalable, and secure network architectures tailored to support control systems and industrial automation processes. Consider factors such as real-time data transmission, latency, and redundancy requirements.

  • Integration with Control Systems: Collaborate with automation engineers and control system integrators to integrate network infrastructure with control systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and other industrial devices.

  • Implementation and Configuration: Deploy and configure networking equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, and industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Profisafe, CIP Safety) to ensure reliable communication and data exchange between control system components.

  • Cybersecurity: Implement and maintain cybersecurity measures to protect control system networks against cyber threats, including intrusion detection systems, firewalls, access controls, and network segmentation. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations such as ISA/IEC 62443 and NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor network performance, analyze data traffic patterns, and optimize network configurations to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of control system operations.

  • Troubleshooting and Incident Response: Identify and resolve network issues affecting control system operations in a timely manner. Conduct root cause analysis for network failures and develop strategies to prevent recurrence. Provide support for incident response and recovery efforts.

  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain comprehensive documentation of network designs, configurations, and procedures. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to control system networks and cybersecurity.

  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Work closely with cross-functional teams including automation engineers, IT professionals, and cybersecurity experts to align network infrastructure with organizational goals and requirements. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure successful implementation and operation of control system networks.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field. Advanced degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CISSP) preferred.

  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and managing network infrastructures for control systems and industrial automation environments.

  • Strong understanding of networking technologies and protocols such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, VLANs, OSPF, BGP, and MPLS.

  • Familiarity with industrial automation technologies including SCADA, PLCs, DCS, and HMIs.

  • Expertise in cybersecurity principles and best practices, particularly as they relate to control system networks and industrial control systems.

  • Strong knowledge of bare metal virtualization technologies (VMWare vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix HyperVisor/XenServer, Proxmox). Familiarity with Stratus redundant hardware solutions is a plus.

  • Knowledge of windows domains and domain trusts.

  • Windows Server administration.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration, configuration, and stored procedures.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex network issues affecting control system operations.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve common objectives.

  • Experience with network monitoring and management tools (e.g., Wireshark, Nagios, PRTG) is desirable.

  • Knowledge of industry-specific standards and regulations such as ISA/IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82, and NERC CIP is advantageous.
