What We Do

The SEI Contracts Department administers the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) prime contract with the government on behalf of Carnegie Mellon and serves as the initial point of contact when a contract is required at the SEI. The main role of SEI Contracts is to ensure that agreements are properly executed in accordance with the Government Prime Contract and Carnegie Mellon's Policies and requirements by collaborating, reviewing, and negotiating with the Government, vendors, and other industry customers.

The SEI Contracts & Procurement teams (which includes two lawyers and a paralegal) are additionally responsible for implementing a Procurement Manual that that is consistent with DOD requirements.

Position Summary:

The SEI Contracts department is seeking a law student who might be interested in assisting with a project to examine whether the current procurement policy manual could be revised to streamline procurement processes without jeopardizing contract compliance. This opportunity may be well suited for a student with a finance background/interest, dual degree JD/MBA, or someone interested in contracts, administrative and/or compliance/regulatory law but no prior experience is required.

The intern will also be exposed to a variety of contracts vehicles and may additionally support the department in a contracts analyst role.

Duties:

  • Collaborate with Contracts, Procurement, Legal, and Ethics and Compliance to review existing Policies, Practices, and artifacts.

  • Support the development of a revised Procurement Policy Manual, and adoption documentation related thereto

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree granting program.

  • Able to work an internship schedule during the summer semester.

  • Able to come on-site to the SEI Pittsburgh office.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • Candidates will be subject to a background check.

  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Coursework in Contracts, Administrative Law, and/or Legal Writing

  • Ability to use Microsoft word products required

  • Knowledge of Confluence or Atlassian products preferred
