Solarea Bio is a biotech company in Cambridge, MA pioneering solutions to improve health. Job Summary

We are currently seeking to fill a position in the Discovery team to validate microbial candidates performance for the advancement of novel medical food products. This is a three-month contract role with an anticipated conversion to full-time upon positive evaluation at the end of the contract period. The Senior Research Associate will coordinate and execute the growth of bacterial and fungal strains and identify microbial characteristics to drive the development of novel products. The goal is to assess microbial function in a variety of environments including aerobic and anaerobic conditions and coculture conditions. Additional responsibilities for the role include running established SOPs and general laboratory maintenance.

The ideal candidate will be experienced and proficient in aseptic techniques, growing and characterizing bacteria/fungi, maintaining mammalian tissue culture, and molecular biology/immunological techniques. An ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced and evolving environment exploring novel host-microbial interactions and their relationship to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.


  • Characterize physiological, molecular, and immunomodulatory features of microbes and microbial communities
  • Grow fastidious bacterial and fungal strains and maintain mammalian tissue cultures
  • Prepare bacterial cultures for molecular and co-culture analysis
  • Maintain records in Electronic Lab Notebook and other media as required.
  • Report weekly progress, achievements, and challenges to management team
  • Assist in the preparation of SOPs, presentations, and reports


  • Masters Degree in microbiology or biotechnology with 1-3 years or relevant industry experience; or B.Sc. in microbiology or biotechnology with 3-5 years relevant industry experience
  • Hands-on experience in host-microbe interactions, microbe-microbe interactions, or microbial physiology
  • Detail-oriented individual and rigorous critical thinker
  • Dedication to the research mission with a focus on quality, organization, and swiftness in execution
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member for defined projects and goals
  • Team-focused with strong written and oral communication skills


  • Experimental proficiency with molecular techniques including qPCR, Sequencing and Oxford Nanopore platforms
  • Experience utilizing gas chromatography-based assays to identify individual metabolites
  • Immunology training with experience with cell culture, and ELISA

The Research Production group is responsible for the upstream and downstream manufacturing of drug substance to support pre-clinical trials.
