Job Description:

For this position, Varian seeks an articulate, highly self-motivated individual with a proven ability to handle highly complex technical and legal discussions and balance the needs of Research, Sales, Marketing, Engineering, Accounting, Regulatory and Legal departments. The primary goal for the Research Collaborations team is to drive customer partnerships to productively contribute to the on-going development of Varian's product lines and oncology-based technologies.

The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate the ability to juggle the demands of multiple priorities/tasks with an attention to detail. The job responsibilities will focus on managing the legal aspects of research and strategic collaborations with customers, from the successful negotiation of research agreements to maintenance of a contract archive and helping the team keep track of its various contract commitments. This will involve a significant amount of cross-functional team coordination through meetings and progress tracking to bring contracts to completion both on time and within budget.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Customer Relationship Management

  • Support the Research Collaborations Managers in customer queries or needs related to Research Collaborations, particularly with regard to contract matters.

  • Support Research Collaborations in drafting and negotiating template based agreements and amendments

  • Negotiate direct with Varian's customers' offices of sponsored research

  • Contract Management

  • In coordination with Varian Legal, create and manage various templates for research agreements, professional services agreement, and other agreements.

  • Develop project-specific research agreements, including summarization of terms as necessary.

  • Creating template based research agreements, professional services agreements, and other agreements and amendments

  • In coordination with Varian Legal, review red-lined agreements and oversee and support contract negotiations.

  • Manage multiple, simultaneous contract negotiations and prioritize and drive those negotiations to conclusion.

  • Support Research Collaborations Managers and others with business-related decisions during contract negotiations.

  • Manage the process of drafting and negotiating terms and conditions related to the In-Kind Equipment Loans.

  • Facilitate internal contract approval and Compliance processes.

  • Ensure conformity to business needs, proper risk allocation, and compliance with Varian policies and procedures.

  • Partner with various Varian constituents in efforts to streamline the contracting process

  • Management Reporting

  • Provide monthly activity reports highlighting progress and/or risks to plan.

  • Assist with the development of annual and quarterly budgets/forecasts for both operational and research grants budgets. This position will be responsible for forecasting the start date of agreements under negotiation for the purpose of accurate financial forecasting and then meeting those forecasts.

  • Other Tasks & Periodic Responsibilities

  • Meeting Coordination and Participation

  • Support logistics for major Research meetings Research Partnership Symposium, Developer Workshops, Research Weeks, Key partner Research Retreat meetings, etc. and participate in those meetings

Job Requirements

Qualifications include:

  • Proven ability to organize and maintain complex contract process and documentation

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task with minimal supervision

  • Experience with Legal and/or Healthcare environment for understanding of the internal organizational structure of client facilities

  • Up to 10% travel expected (both domestic and possibly international), to occasionally include weekends

  • Prefer an individual having experience with: academic healthcare facilities; radiation oncology industry; contract negotiation/management; obtaining grant funding and/or coordinating scientific research

  • Degree in science, law or technology preferred

  • Customer-facing communication skills
