Great American's Bond Division has been underwriting surety and fidelity bonds for over 90 years. The Bond Division is currently searching for trainees to join our contract underwriting team in Dallas, TX. Participants will develop the fundamental skills required of a surety bond contract underwriter and learn to review and evaluate surety bond risks. They will work closely with experienced underwriters, managers, and experts within the Surety Bond division to learn underwriting skills.

This 1-year training program will take place at Great American's corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, OH. After the training, this position will be in our Dallas, TX office. Housing during the training program is included.

Training includes the following:

  • Introduction to the insurance industry and the unique aspects of surety within the insurance industry.

  • Analytical skills including financial statement analysis, trend analysis, and general business risk analysis.

  • Pricing and terms for various risks.

  • Relationship development and interpersonal skills necessary to obtain business opportunities and work within a team to achieve success.

  • Interaction with agents and contractors to learn their perspective on business relationships.

  • Development of independent judgment while providing access to vast resources and personnel.

  • Investigation of new and existing accounts through internal and external resources.

  • Utilization of technology to improve breadth and depth of risk analysis.

  • Effective communication to persuasively present terms, conditions, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Learning strategies to develop business opportunities and to grow a business.

  • Risks associated with running a construction company and some of the most common reasons for failure.

The training is a combination of reading assignments and discussions, as well as on the job training including live interaction with agents, contractors, and team members. Data entry, manipulation, retrieval, and interpretation are also part of the training. Besides developing strong analytical skills, the training will improve oral and written communication to maximize personal success.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in general business, Accounting, Finance, or related disciplines.

  • Strong MS Office skills and must be good with technology.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Relocation to Cincinnati for 1-year training program

Experience: Typically, part of a formal training program. Generally, 0 to 6 months of experience.

Scope of Job: Performs work under close supervision and technical direction. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops working knowledge of business systems and processes used to perform the functions of the job. Works within narrowly defined limits and authority on assignments of low complexity. Position Requires occasional travel.
