Primary Purpose: This position is responsible for performing a variety of engineering assignments in developing and implementing production/ processing methods and controls to meet quality standards in the most cost-efficient manner. Drive breakthrough process and product targets using lean tools and BPI processes to identify opportunities and drive improvement. Responsible for advancing the lean culture and ensuring the RCI process is highly productive.

Some of the essential aspects of the position include:

  • Leads or facilitates project teams for implementation of multi plant projects working closely with plant management, engineers, and suppliers.

  • Responsible for lean implementation, providing lean expertise, guidance, and motivation and leadership on kaizen events and lean assessment

  • Coordinate the introduction of new product into the manufacturing process

  • Analyzes data to determine feasibility of product proposal.

  • Plans, conducts, and/or directs research and/or development work on complex projects require the origination and application of new and unique approaches.

  • Recommends and implements improvements and/or modifications in sequence of operations, equipment utilization, and related matters.

  • Confers with research and other engineers to clarify and resolve problems; prepares design modifications, as appropriate. Recommends changes in procedures, design or equipment.

  • Interfaces with Manufacturing to resolve issues.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Process drawings for approved requests.

  • Assemble job files- custom and engineered to order products

  • Works safely always; reports unsafe conditions to Supervisor.

What it takes:

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Manufacturing Engineering. Industrial Design or related field.

  • Lean manufacturing principles, including RCI, 3P, Value Stream Mapping, Problem solving and statistical analysis.

  • Minimum 2 years manufacturing engineering experience in contract furniture or related field

  • Demonstrate success in implementing continuous process improvement programs

  • Experience managing projects to successful completion.

  • Required: AutoCAD 2004, Excel, Word

  • Recommended: Access or Crystal Reports, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, 3D Solid Modeling Software, IMOS.

Problem Solving. This competency is fundamental to RCI and will be critical in this role. Total fluency in the use of fishbone, 5-why, A3, and other lean tools is non-negotiable.

Influence. In an RCI role, influence is vital as you are generally an "outsider" who must earn the trust and respect of Factory management by providing clear value and demonstrating true expertise.

Change Agility. RCI engineers need to not only be able to change quickly, they often must be catalysts for change. you must lead by example and be willing to consistently push and constantly react to changing needs, situations, and priorities.

Communication Skills- Ability to effectively present information, both orally and written, and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.

Mathematical Skills- Ability to calculate proportions and percentages.

Reasoning Ability- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

They will identify and implement Continuous Improvement projects with cover and fully upholstered suppliers that lower La-Z-Boy's costs for purchased goods, while maintaining/improving quality and service New Product Development. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned): * Establish, implement and maintain New Product Development processes: * New product introduction process: work on New Product Development with La-Z-Boy suppliers, guide the external partners to ensure the new product meets La-Z-Boy performance and compliance standards, propose changes as needed * Color approval process: establish standards, masters, retains, PU/split matches * Testing process: work with La-Z-Boy and 3rd party labs to conduct performance and compliance testing for initial selections, market yardage/samples, and initial production runs. Monitor and evaluate the results. Work with the labs and suppliers to resolve failures * Maintain New Product information databases to support strategic supplier management * Collaborate with Merchandising and Sourcing teams on new product development * Work with La-Z-Boy external partners to develop new color, yarn, finishing and performance applications * Assist in the evaluation, selection, and development of partners to build a world-class procurement practice * Utilize external and internal expertise in developing, implementing, tracking, and facilitating all activities associated with new product development. Partner with suppliers to improve their quality programs and delivery performance * Conduct PPAP's for New Market introductions and Product changes. Provide on-site training for the suppliers and LZB QC teams * Responsible for market yardage/samples and initial production purchase orders for new product to be tested and shipped on-time * Maintain PPAP assessment databases to support strategic supplier management * Responsible to ensure inbound quality requirements are achieved for all new product introductions, including performance and compliance testing. * Work with suppliers as needed to help achieve quality, delivery, and cost objectives. * Drive continuous improvement in new product development practices across the relevant supply base to improve aesthetic value, quality, delivery, and cost performance over time. Develop and maintain the full business case for cost reduction projects, including all necessary information to accurately describe the extent and cost of the proposed changes * Collaborate with USA and GTC Quality teams to assess supplier's production quality and identify the needed improvements. Conduct on-site training and follow-up as necessary. Partner with suppliers to improve their quality programs and delivery performance. * Participate in developing sourcing strategies to meet the needs of the business from a design, cost, quality, and delivery perspective while driving year-over-year spend reduction. * Act as project manager for assigned projects/suppliers * Other duties as assigned SCOPE & IMPACT: * Supports suppliers across the Enterprise - Branded, England, Casegoods., Thailand, Joybird and other business as required. Global responsibility including travel. Project management of cost reduction projects worth as much as $10 million annually. Suppliers supported with spend of approximately $100 million annually.
