UW Medicine Strategic Marketing & Communications is looking for a content writer/editor to heighten and expand UW Medicine brand awareness through a variety of communication vehicles. This position requires excellent writing and storytelling skills to develop engaging copy for websites, marketing and advertising campaigns, content marketing and other projects as assigned.
The Content Writer/Editor is critical to the reputation of UW Medicine. The language we use, how we use it, and the words we choose reflects on the department and UW Medicine as a whole.
UW Medicine uses content marketing as our means to provide the public with information about medicine and the services we provide. We must provide content that is error-free with a consistent voice.
Working in a department with diverse business operations and staff requires the ability to prepare, edit and publish materials that represent the personal style of the author while aligning with UW Medicine standards. Competing priorities require ability to manage short- and long-term assignments in a way that achieves results and meets deadlines.
Develops, writes and edits content for websites, digital marketing assets, presentations and other projects. Examples include writing copy for UWMedicine.org, WWAMI website and service line marketing campaigns.
Writes news, profiles and feature stories. Examples include: writing health tip article or personal profile stories for inclusion in newsletters, blogs or website landing pages.
Writes health information content. Examples include: writing copy that explains symptoms and treatment for a medical condition using plain language.
Edit and review content produced by other team members. Examples include: review of articles written by peers and editing existing web copy.
Creates messaging to promote UW Medicine. Examples include: key messages for email and social media campaigns.
Gathers material through research, interviews and meetings with internal and external sources of information, synthesizing concepts from numerous sources. Example: Foundational content for WWAMI website.
Acquires knowledge of UW Medicine's programs and accomplishments by interviewing faculty, leadership and subject matter experts.
Serves on project planning teams and department committees.
Supports special projects and administrative initiatives, as well as performs related duties and tasks as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism or related field and a minimum of four (4) years of communication experience.
Experience and references that verify:
Excellent writing and editing skills with a good grasp of grammar and attention to detail.
Good organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, handle shifting priorities and carry on through task completion to meet deadlines.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Broad knowledge of and experience with various communication methods and new media.
Ability to write professional and effective material for healthcare consumers, patients and other target audiences.
Ability to establish effective and cooperative work relationships, individually and on project teams.
Strong customer-service orientation in a fast-paced environment.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook.
Experience working in a complex organization.
Experience writing and editing health and science-related content.
Work is performed in an open office setting with noise and other distractions. The position may travel by foot or vehicle to various locations to gather information and/or assist with activities. Position maintains regular office hours Monday through Friday and occasional evening and weekend work to participate in meetings and special events.
