Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The content writer plays an active role in telling the story of the University of South Carolina from within the Division of Communications and Marketing. The writer is dedicated to engaging storytelling and has a proven capacity to write content in a wide range of formats, from feature stories to marketing and social copy. Writes content, as needed, for the USC Today faculty/staff email, the alumni magazine, the research magazine, press releases, brand-level or unit-level marketing needs, and video or social media projects.
In this role, the content writer will work independently on projects prioritized by the director of editorial content and will collaborate with colleagues throughout the Division of Communications and Marketing.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 2 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and three to four years of professional experience in a client facing communications, marketing or public relations role with an emphasis on digital communication. Experience writing for broad audiences, particularly higher education.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to write on-brand, engaging content and ad copy across all media.
Ability to think creatively and strategically.
Ability to collaborate with content, design and video teams to concept, create and execute campaigns.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Proficient in AP style with editing, proofreading and grammatical skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
Strong project management skills and ability to work with creative briefs.
Ability to use work management platforms effectively.
Ability to stay current on best practices for marketing.
Desire to learn, grow in a creative and collaborative team environment.

Content writing: Interview faculty, staff, alumni, donors, supporters and students and write engaging stories for multiple audiences.

Copy editing and proofing: Assist in copy editing proofreading for all print and digital products as needed. Special emphasis on marketing and social copy.

Develop sources and story ideas: Meet with faculty, department heads, communications staff and others as needed to develop the pipeline of story ideas for the University. Use tools such as Web of Science, monthly research reports from the Office of the Vice President for Research and others to identify potential story ideas. Work with the director of editorial content to determine story priorities.
