Under the general supervision of the Community Engagement and Communications Director, this position works in collaboration with the Communications Department to oversee the development, coordination, and implementation of design, copywriting, and brand management for the City of Golden. Coordinates the execution of the City's collateral materials and their distribution while meeting the design and content requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and HB21-1110 Colorado Law for Persons with Disabilities. Provides project management and expertise across the department/divisions to ensure brand identity and accessibility for residents and visitors of the City.

May include evenings and weekends.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Writes original, compelling content and edits stakeholder content to maintain consistency and brand identity for digital and print materials for internal and external audiences.

  • Works in partnership with departments/divisions and in consultation with the Director of Communications, to provide expertise, guidance, content, and material creation that are most meaningful to our audiences and goals.

  • Creates innovative high-quality digital and print graphic design and provides consulting and production support for the City of Golden using an established style guide for projects including but not limited to the Golden Informer magazine, logos, flyers, banners, signage, reports, brochures, advertisements, templates, infographics, vector illustrations, logos, presentations, web graphics, simple motion graphics, etc.

  • Manages multiple projects and priorities while meeting deliverables.

  • Maintains knowledge of current design trends and their potential application to our brand.

  • Coordinates with outside agencies (printers, promo companies) to finalize and ensure products meet brand standards as necessary.

  • Optimizes graphic designs to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act and Colorado Law for Persons with Disabilities (HB21-1100- WCAG 2.1AA) with internal and external digital files that comply with the law.

  • Assists in maintaining style guide consistency across visual platforms.

  • Reviews vendor final layouts and suggests improvements when necessary.

  • Performs other related assignments and special projects as may be required.

This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have a supervisory role but may oversee Interns or Volunteers as approved by the Director of Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Administration, Media Relations, Marketing, or related field. Minimum 5 years' combined experience in graphic design and content management, including content creation, writing, editing, public information, and or public relations experience. Required proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat. Experience with Issuu preferred. Familiarity and experience with the Americans with Disabilities Act and HB21-1110 Colorado Law for Persons with Disabilities strongly preferred.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the applicant possesses the necessary traits and skill required for the position may be considered as substitution for degree.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid driver's license with good driving record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret written and oral communications sufficiently to identify potential problems, make necessary edits without oversight from the Director of Communications. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations intended for the general public, citizen groups, elected officials and employees. Ability to communicate effectively with others to capture their needs in multimedia projects.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must possess the mathematical aptitude to understand and communicate complex municipal finance issues graphically.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be a high-energy, creative self-starter. Must be flexible, able to work independently and meet imperative deadlines. Ability to pay strict attention to details and timelines. Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Suite, Issuu, and be adaptable to new technologies that enhance the viewer experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily works in a small studio setting. Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The City of Golden is supportive of alternate work arrangements when possible, and this role may be eligible for a hybrid at home/in office schedule.

Some evenings, weekends, and off-hours work may be required.
