Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Responsible for analyzing some of the more complex application submitted for Retail Lending. This position will have direct responsibility to underwrite secured and unsecured Retail Lending products (Home Equity lines of credit, Home Equity term loans, Unsecured Loans, and Direct Installment Loans) across multiple states. This position will support process improvement and business objectives. Provide superior customer service while also "Partnering and Performing" to both internal and external customers (Retail Banking Center Managers, Vendors, other internal departments, etc) Support process improvement and contribute to achieving business objectives. Accept additional projects as identified.

This position will have the minimum in consumer lending authority:

  • Secured- $150,000

  • Unsecured/Credit Cards- $10,000

  • Analyze consumer credit reports of Retail Lending applications to evaluate risk and make appropriate credit decision for Retail Lending across multiple states, Markets, and geographic regions.

  • Review documents to support credit decision (verification of income, tax returns, personal financial statement, trusts and additional supporting documentation, etc)

  • Reviews documents to underwrite within the stated Retail Lending Guidelines and applicable regulations (flood determination, property appraisals, property reports/title searches, and documents, etc)

  • Verifies completeness and accuracy of credit applications.

  • Formulates and communicates credit decision to Retail Banking Centers for all Consumer Loan applications (either approve, decline, or counteroffer) in compliance with established underwriting guidelines, compliance, and regulatory requirements.

  • Develop business relationships and build rapport with Retail Banking Centers and other internal departments to achieve mutual goals.

  • Manage application pipeline to meet business objectives for Service Level Agreements in place.

  • Provide superior service to both internal and external customers.

  • Review credit applications and recommends decisions on applications over their assigned authority to Supervisor/Manager.

  • Work with FVP, Director of Retail Lending to assist in any relevant projects and/or strategic planning of department.

  • Work with FVP, Director of Retail Lending on goal setting and/or KPI management

  • Sales Center training opportunities with FVP, Director of Retail Lending

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed to Perform Essential Functions of the Job:

  • 3-5 yrs

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent business experience required

  • Minimum of 3 years consumer lending, banking, or financial services experience

  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and external customers

  • Strong attention to detail and level of follow up

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently in a team environment

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel

May also be responsible for the leadership of an underwriting team. Renders underwriting decisions and subsequent clearing conditions to ensure credit guidelines are met. Proactive in communicating the decisions to the Loan Originators, as well as serving as a resource to Residential Mortgage personnel on underwriting questions. Ensures team follows determined workflow, there by meeting service level agreements that have been identified. Responsible for not only ensuring productivity levels of the team are met, but also ensures credit quality meets all defined standards. Handles complex underwriting decisions requiring senior knowledge and/or unique problem solving abilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Utilize all systems in place, including automated underwriting to underwrite files in a timely manner. * Underwrite conventional, portfolio loans, and FHA/VA loans. * Underwrite simultaneous second lien/home equity loans in appropriate origination system, within approved RCC lending authority. * Manage expected service levels related to decision and condition clearing. * Update information on processing and underwriting systems to verify, add, delete or waive conditions. * Contact Loan Originators with the decision on the loan immediately after underwriting the file. * Monitor quality levels of each underwriter to ensure adherence to standards. * Ensure team is providing a high level of customer service to internal and external customers. * Determine success rate of meeting certain benchmarks, and update required team performance reports. * Retrieve, review, distribute, and discuss reports related to the underwriting team. * Monitor compliance issues, including that all team members attend required meetings and that all staff are in compliance with state and federal regulations. * Provide feedback to other staff and loan officers. * Demonstrate leadership skills as a team player by providing superior customer service, being flexible and approachable. * Responsible for appropriate section of HMDA Worksheet. * Review exception reports to ensure completion of all tasks. * Serve as an intermediary for loan issues with the Regional Sales Managers. * Actively participate in ongoing efforts to continually improve customer service for internal and external customers. * Perform personnel tasks for the team such as time sheets, coaching, and identifying training needs. * Assist in training new hires. * Maintain knowledge of Fifth Third Mortgage Company policies and procedures in addition to private investors, government investors and portfolio Credit Policy and Guidelines. * Consumer lending credit authority is commensurate with consumer lending authority guidelines and business need.
