S&ME is seeking Construction Materials Engineering Technicians interested in starting or advancing their careers in construction materials testing working on aviation projects throughout the Charlotte, NC market. Job Snapshot:

As an Engineering Technician, you will make a difference! The field testing and observations of construction materials you perform each day help ensure compliance with industry standards and project specifications. You will see construction projects from beginning to end, documenting the successful placement and use of soil, concrete, rebar, asphalt, aggregate, and other building materials. It is our job to make sure it is "built right", and at S&ME we take that responsibility very seriously. Join us and become part of the team that makes construction a success.

Based on experience, responsibilities can include:

Technicians I, II, and III:

  • Review plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites

  • Document field activities, observations, and testing results of concrete, soil, asphalt and other building materials used on project sites to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards

  • Daily use of Metafield, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems to document reporting and testing results

  • Calibrate field and laboratory equipment to ensure precision in testing processes

  • Perform Special Inspection observations per the International Building Code (IBC) to enforce regulatory compliance and quality assurance on projects

  • Communicate daily with management staff, general contractors, and clients

Senior Technician (IV):

  • Same as above with the addition of the following:

  • Ability to mentor less experienced construction staff and interns

  • Ability to train and coach less-experienced construction staff in testing and observation procedures

  • Coordination and direction of others on projects requiring multiple construction staff

  • Assisting project manager with plan and specification review for proposal preparation, project assignments, and training

  • Serve as a Special Inspection agent, based on certifications and local IBC requirements

  • Assisting project manager with resolutions for deviations from project plans and specifications

Education/Experience Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED

  • Technician I:

  • 0-2 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials

  • Technician II:

  • 2+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials, or equivalent experience and an associate degree in a related field

  • Technician III:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials, or equivalent experience and an associate degree in a related field

  • Senior Technician (IV):

  • 5+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials. Oversight and/or mentoring experience of junior staff preferred

Additional Qualifications:

  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language

  • Proficiently complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device, using Microsoft Office and email

  • Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure

  • Industry certifications such as ACI, ICC, NICET or DOT, a plus

  • Ability to work outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions and outside normal business hours

  • Standing 8-12+ hours a day, on occasion

  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)

  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites

  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
